My trim gauge is pegged at full up. Sometimes on the water, it will move as I trim up/down.

I'm pretty sure the wiring is good. I know there's a steel ball that contacts one of the trim cylinders. I have taken that out and inspected it and it seemed clean.

Question is - could there be some corrosion in the cylinder? Or is it more likely a bad ground?

The trim sending unit is usually a plastic switch that goes up and down with the motor. A continuity test will help you test that. It could also be your gauge.

The 1988 model would have the external cylinders.-----Trim sending unit in one of the cylinders I believe.

Yeah, here's a diagram from the Service Manual.

GAUGE VERY ERRATIC
  1. Check wiring connections
  2. Check for weak sender spring
  3. Check for bad ground springs
  4. Check for loose sending unit windings

Ok, thanks. I'll give that a shot. Looking really tough to find parts for this. For instance, that spring is very difficult to find. I might need to just take it to a hardware shop to find a similar replacement if that is in fact the issue.
