I have picked up a new project.
1988 25HP Evinrude E25RCCA
The guy I bought it from said he cleaned carb, fuel pump replaced, and new water pump.
This is pull start. I pull it and get nothing. On 3rd or so pull it backfires and seems a bit harder to pull but still no start tho.
I saw the link and sync was way off. I adjusted that, I am not too familiar with this year. I adjusted according to a older model. Lowest throttle position, got the cam roller set right before the 2 marks on armature plate. Turn throttle and cam hits and starts to open carb right in the middle of the marks. Test and still no start.
I read a thread from racerone talking about the link from the carb to back of motor and this collar needs to be set correctly. I am unsure of where it should be and bet guy adjusted this.
Attached are pics. Let me know if I need better pics. Thanks for any advice.

easy old carb style...

suggest you clean yourself.

check the idle channel to the top needle ... open it ccw .5 turn retry
blow some fuel mix in the carb see what happens
make certain you have sparks on plugs
seems to have an electric primer... make certain it works ( at least click)
E25RCCA is it strickly manual ? check manual primer if no electric primer

This, while for an older engine still applies when checking/adjusting the Fuel Saver Linkage

I was suspect of the flywheel key as well. Got a prob tho. Hit it with my impact wrench and nothing. Nut is not budging. Soaked for 24 hrs in pb blaster and still not moving. Gonna try a friend's impact wrench that's a bit better than mine. Mine is old, still works but may not be powerful enough. I'll try some other suggestions first just to see. I appreciate the help big time!!! You guys are always soo awesome.

Race nailed it...I just reminded you.

Wires coming from power pack are orange with blue or green strips.

Blue (sky), goes to upper coil...green (grass) goes to lower. Or leave it now that you swapped leads. (Not)

Other wires like trim and tilt are the same.

Yes racerone nailed it. I did check flywheel key and it was in perfect shape. I did link and sync right out the gate so that was set. This motor first pull started right up. Only had to adjust air fuel needle and she idled nice. Picked this up for 200 bucks. 0 money in it. Got quite the deal. She runs great
Here is a short of it running

Well congrats....those are very good little utilitarian outboards..
I have quite a few.

Some observations though. It may not run so good after you put it on a boat and put it on a load but it seems to be running on all cylinders.

When I look at your link and sync closely, and unless you've changed it, it does not appear to be done correctly. I believe when on a boat and when you give it throttle it will most likely fall on its face somewhat.

I believe your motor has a service bulletin on the l&s but your even under that. Maybe your pictures are off.

Re-examin that procedure if you think I'm right otherwise go test.

Cheers

Many motors with small problems end up on the market.----Bonus if you know motors and simple trouble shooting.----Many dealers now frown on older motors because the owners are not an easy source of revenue.-----Older motor give you years of low cost boating if you learn the basics.

here is a good free book 450 pages + on older versions mind you, but still is a great read whose mechanical concepts still apply on newer ( not eletronics) engines. oil, gear cases, coils carbs, water pumps have evolved but conceptually still the same.

Of course for specific needs one must have the specific service manual and parts lists

A lot of these oldies cost next to nothing if one is patient and certainly no more expensive than the tax on a new model ! nothing like a nice refurbed 6hp fisherman or small mercs to troll all day long and or you back when the bigger kicker leaves you stranded miles away.

print/bind locally or just store on a pc PDF file.
