1988 20hp Evinrude - lower

Got a frozen lower unit on my '88 20hp Evinrude. Any ideas on how much a rebuilt unit should cost or whether it would be worth it to do it myself?

are you sure it"s the LU and not the motor? Drop the LU and see if the power head will turn over ( spark plugs out with a socket on the flywheel nut, or try with the recoil.
If indeed it's the LU, they show up on eBay, but there is no way to know if you are getting one in any better shape than yours.

Definately lower. Power head is on shop table getting cleaned out. Lower is frozen. Saw some on-line rebuilt sales, but little in the 20hp range. Prices were all over the place.
