I'm trying to upload a picture of the steering arm hope this works.

Can someone tell me what these markings mean and also explain the piece between the starting / kill switch that turn left to right.

Al, I'm not familiar with your motor but it seems pretty simple. The red bottton should be the kill button. The dial around the kill button should be the low motor speed adjustment to control the RPM's of the motor at idle. The marking with the 2 arrows is the throttle position you should be in when you shift the motor. The other symbol shows the variable area between Wide Open Throttle (WOT) and the shift gear position.

BTW, keep all replies IN THIS THREAD, don't open a new thread. It's really hard to follow and help you across 3 threads. Perhaps the Mods can kill those other 2 posts.

Now here's my problem. when I try to start the engine with the throttle set on the white arrows and the start / kill switch clip in place I pull the cord and nothing, even w/ choke 1/2 way out. But, if I turn the throttle to the two 1/2 round markings (variable WOT area) w/ choke in 1/2 position it starts. after letting it sorta warm up. I would push the choke in slowly as I turn the throttle to the idle position (the 2 white arrows) it would stall. Then when I try to restart it, it won't But I noticed that the shifter would only shift to the foward position and neutral and not in reverse?? I would have to tilt the engine then lock it in position it will then shift from neutral, reverse and foward then it will start again??? Any suggestions

I'm sure it will need a tune up it has been sitting a long time. Also would anyone know the tune up setting for this engine model J6RCUD, 1987 Johnson 6hp

The markings on the tiller arm are sometimes relative. Some need more throttle, some less. Since you have to add some choke (make the mixture more rich) as you throttle down to idle , points to a clogged carb or the low speed idle needle is out of adjustment. If this motor hasn't been run in a long time, do a carb cleaning. Being a 1985, it won't have a magnito ignition, so there's no points to adjust.

The throttle won't advance past a preset value while in neutral, to prevent over reving the motor. In forward , you should be able to fully advance the throttle to WOT. Reverse can be limited in RPM's too.

If you're going to wrench on your motor, a service manual is a must. I prefer the OEM version, it has more detail on servicing etc.

They are the markings that denote the correct throttle range for starting. If the throttle is set too wide then the starter mechanism should lock out,

So that all seems to be operating normally.

I don't think there is any interlock with the gear shift position. There was not in 1984.

I dont understand the bit about tilting the motor to get the gearshift to work properly. The Owners instruction book does say you should not shift the gears unless the motor is running but I don't think any harm will be caused unless you foce the lever. If it shifts between forward neutral and reverse when it is running then there is no problem.

Remember dont fix what aint broke!

The thing you should be concerned about most is a good flow of cooling water. Renew the pump impeller if in doubt. The 84 model, and the 87 model if it is the same, is inclined to restriction of the water flow at the top of the water pipe between pump and power head due to corrosion around the grommet. The flow from the pee hole must be a good strong jet of water!

You asked earlier if the ingition is coil and points or electronic. Electronic!


Do not operate the motor out of water as that will wreck the water pump impeller quicker than you can say "two shakes of a racoons tail"
