I have a 1987 Mercruiser 3.o, I need to change the shift cable. Do you have to take the whole back of the outdrvie off?

The lower shift is the one that normally gets changed. Yup get the manual. Yup you put the drive in forward & remove it to change the cable.
There's a slick little $4 tool that holds the shift arm in place when you reinstall the drive, it's smart money. There's a nice tutorial on Mercstuff.com too.
