1987 Johnson 88SPL Quits when putting into gear

My 1987 Johnson 88SPL seems to run great at full throttle but has a tendency to quit when in neutral at low idle. I can increase the idle with the control lever and it idles up fine, but when I want to go into gear and I push the idle lever back down and the motor often conks out. This is very frustrating. I replaced the spark plugs and it seemed to be worse. It could also be an idle adjustment, but I'm not sure how to change this.<br /><br />Any suggestions.
