1987 Force 85 vs Force 90

Good afternoon,

I am looking to either swap motors or swap power heads. I have a 1987 force 85 and one of the motors that I am looking at is a force 90. I’m not sure on the year but the pictures make it look like a Chrysler lower unit. Can someone go through what is different on a force 90 vs 85? Is it just a different carb or is the motor different? Are the controls the same? I attached a picture of the potential motor I would purchase.

The controls are the same up until about 1995, then they changed to Mercury style remote control and cables.
The 85Hp is a 3 cylinder engine with std bore 3,312 in.
The 90 is a 3 cylinder engine wíth std bore 3,375 in.
The intake port maybe different and the jets in the carbs are different.

It really depends on what year 90 hp you are looking at.
Ignition systems will be different, ranging from CD modules, to trigger, stator, flywheel, and wire connections and colors.
Props, transom bracket, tilt and trim units were changed, along with carbs, controls, and choke vs. fuel enricher.

If it is a 1990 or 1991 model, differences will be minimal. 1992 lead to more changes, as did '93 and '94 models. Then in '95 and '96 there were more changes.

Hi Nordin,
I had a '92 powerhead that already had the Merc. controls and had change the bottom plate/Timing tower to make at work on my '90 set-up. the one in the picture shows the water intake higher up (the version before it became a complete Merc. LU & inner changeable with any 2 shaft models)

True, picture from under the Cowl would be helpful to see the ignition etc. etc. would be helpful :)

There's where the additional 5 HP came from :D

I didn’t end up going with the force 90. I was able to buy a force 85. One question that I have is the motor I just bought doesn’t have automatic time, can I easy attach the other bracket and controls to this motor so that I do have the trim system

If you plan on putting an electrohydraulic Tilt and Trim, you need to make sure you hold up on installing the motor on the boat until you install the T&T. It'll make it a lot easier to install the T&T..
