Hey all,
Gotten a real kick out of seeing all the rebuilds going on around this site, and have gotten a lot of helpful info reading the posts as well. Figured I would post as I rebuild my boat so others could follow along. I came into possession of a 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2102 a few months ago, and the most noticeable thing wrong was the engine was literally going through the transom. I don't shy away from getting my hands dirty, so I said to my wife "No Problem!" and I started working on it. Here is what I have so far...

Getting to a point where I could take the engine off took the longest. Once the engine was off, I made some good progress

The transom was completely rotten, luckily it only took a day and a half of on and off working on it to get the rotten wood out. The part that is taking the longest is grinding down all the fiberglass to accept the new wood. Cordless tools are great for convenience and portability, but for heavy duty grinding, my angle grinder craps out after about 5 minutes of use...

Some before and after pics of the teak wood pieces of the boat...

Cut out the broken section of transom fiberglass and new through hull plumbing for the bilge pump. That is where I am at. Next is to put new glass and gelcoat down in that gigantic hole I just made and then cut the new transom wood and glass that in. More to come!

I got the giant hole in the transom repaired. Gelcoat needs to be sanded down smooth but that should go quickly. I got the transom wood cut out of 3/4" MG Ply and pretty closely fit, just fine tuning now. Got new cabin doors cut, and got the tub that was cut out prepped for new wood at the engine mount. Filled various holes made by screws in the transom fiberglass as well. I will post pics soon.

Thanks proshadetree, I really am looking forward to having it ready to be on the lake again. I am sure it will turn into a constant project over the next few years to keep it looking good and fix the little things that I don't really like.

Re: 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2102 Rebuild

Thanks GT1000000, Got a lot done yesterday, got the final sanding on the inside of the patch done, and only have a few more spots on the gelcoat to finish up. I got the transom wood installed, and a tone of PB layed up around the edges. Next will be to layup 3 layers of 1708 over the transom itself, and then add in the transom supports that will run from the transom to the bulkhead just in front of the transom. After that, put the new wood in the tub area right in front of the engine, then seal everything back up. I am going to run a heafty amount of fuel line cleaner and carb cleaner through the engine as well, hopefully that will get it back up to where it needs to be. I am going to change the crankcase oil before I take it out on the lake though.Transom Repair 1.jpg

DAN, I hope so! The larger one loves the water so I am hoping that when we get the boat on the water he will just jump right in.

F16Driver. First off if you are a F16 Pilot, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!! Second, and I am NOT busting your chops just posting this as a learning tool for you an others to follow. Using some plastic laminate (Formica) and taping it over the holes on the ouside of the transom was all that would have been necessary to effect the repair. Putting a 3/8" layer of PB Thickened resin on the transom skin and wood and clamping it in place would have filled the 3 cut out areas and the laminate would have made it smooth as silk. Waxing the laminate with some furniture wax will prevent the pb from sticking. Next day take it off and then grind it down a bit lay a couple of layers of CSM over the area then sand, fair and Gel. IMHO there was no need for an inside glass repair other than the wood and the PB. It'll be plenty strong this way and faster and easier. Your way works too! Just more tedious and IMHO not necessary. Wish I'd seen this earlier, Might have saved you some time and effort. Maybe not!

Re: 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2102 Rebuild

Thanks for the tip Woodonglass, I did something similar by laying up a large sheet of wax paper on the outside of the transom backed with stiff cardboard. I then did the layup from the inside and got a relatively smooth surface on the outside when I pulled the paper off, however I had to grind out some spots around the edge where the layup met the original fiberglass in the transom. I think I ordered way too much 1708 too so I am not being shy about using it. Thanks again for the tip. If I had to do this again I would do things a little differently...

Re: 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2110 Rebuild

Just as a quick FYI, I contacted bayliner yesterday to get an owner's manual, and my boat is a 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2110 Cuddy. Never knew and had been trying to track down the exact model for a while since the title doesn't specify...

Re: 1987 Bayliner Trophy 2110 Rebuild

Another productive weekend...got the transom fiberglass complete...

and got the 3/4 in ply put in the stern section of the boat which was taken out...

Fiberglassed that in...

And PB'd the transom supports inbetween the gas tank bulkhead and the transom

Stay tuned for more!
Next is to fiberglass those transom supports in, rejoin the stern cap to the transom, put the engine back on, put the cockpit kick plate back in, and finish the new cabin doors.
On deck after that is to fabricate a bench seat to go behind the live well, order and install a bimini cover, get all the electrical (gauges) working, and polish all the gelcoat.
