1986 Starcraft FM 160 Restoration

Okay guys I am soon to post some pics of this process, as I have already started the teardown. My question to start is I am wondering where to put my fuel tank. Seems like in this boat they keep the tank at the stern, under a cloth. But, the P.O. has run a fuel line from a 10 gallon tank under the steering console back to the motor. You can still sit comfortably. The transom tag calls for a 90H.P. motor, and I cant imagine that the factory thought that the weight of 10-20 gallons of fuel at the stern would be a good idea, as the boat is already stern heavy. I guess the main question is this, how inappropriate is it for me to keep a fuel tank right under my feet? Seems a little sketchy to me. But also, I have my batteries in the back of the boat, and all of my fuses and panels. I dont think it is a good idea to keep a vented tank back there with all the electricity either. There is a storage compartment in the middle of the floor, but it is very shallow. I am not sure if I want to pay to money for a custom fab aluminum tank for in there or not.......

Any ideas guys? I have a 65hp on the back. There is a 10 gallon tank right at my feet. Just wondering how you guys feel about that.

It's the same as the Supersport Hull less the windshields and dual consoles. I run with a V-4 and a 12 gallon tank in the rear (with one battery).

Whatever you feel comfortable with in regards to balance is fine

Cool Bob. Thanks for the input! I will post some pics on here when I get a chance. Are you running an Evinrude back there? How long do you typically run for on 12gallons? Just curious.

One should not publicly ask Bob for too many specifics on the particular "V4" he's running on his 16' Starcraft Let's just say it drinks considerably more gallons per hour than anything you're looking to run.

Okay.......so my V-4 does drink a bit more and weighs a bit more than a 3 cylinder :redface: and the engine cover was repainted ...........it has no numbers. One cough cough fifteen cough I would love to find a 140 powerhead though

Boat looks nice Bob. How many guys did it take to flip her over for the paint job? Man right now I have the carpet up on my boat, and the wood looks original. All but the middle piece. Looks like the P.O. put in some regular 'ol plywood and just sealed it with some type of wood sealant. The storage hatch in the middle was just replaced with a solid piece of wood. Very strange. Anyways I am wondering if I should tear the floors out now while Im at it. I have the console out and the floors are bear. Spring is in the air, and I think the floors will last me a few more years so I may just carpet it and go on about my business. I have to let the OCD in me chill out.

One more thing dudes. What size foam would you guys use for seating? I am custom making some seats for the boat and was going to use 3" polyester foam. Any ideas?
