Hi all,

The bottom gear assembly (see attached picture) on my 1986 Evinrude 30 has self-destructed. It looks like one of the teeth of the gears popped off and rattled around for an hour while I made it back to port and now I need a whole new unit. The main shaft is fine - everything else needs replacing except the housing and the propeller.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this economically? The rest of the motor is in pristine condition and has been essentially rebuilt over the past 3 years. Compression is 'near-new'.

I would love to upgrade to a 50hp-75hp 2 stroke, so at worst I land up selling this as 'parts'.

Thanks!

I'd try calling some salvage yards.....I'm sure they'll be able to get you the parts for a good price.

I suppose you could rebuild it, but if I wanted more hp though, I would probably part this one out and upgrade.

Just curious, how long have you had the motor? Was the lower unit maintained and filled with lube?

Good luck.

Re: 1986 Evinrude 30 CE30ELCDM

I have had the boat & motor for 3 full years and my neighbor for 2 years prior to that. I had checked the lube earlier this year and it was a little old/brown but otherwise clean and free of grit and water. I had been at full throttle in clean and deep water when I quickly decelerated to dead-slow when I heard a pop, then a constant clanging like a fire-alarm bell that had a blanket thrown over it. My neighbor had bounced off bottom once when he owned it around 4 years ago and that might have put a stress fracture in the tooth that came loose and ate everything up.

Does anyone know of any boat-motor salvage yards that may have what I'm looking for? Preferably in western Canada or the PNW?
