1986 9.9 merc 2 stroke

motor was running ok at slow speed, opened up throttle to 3/4 and traveled about1/2 a mile turned around and got back on the throtle to about 3/4 again . All of a sudden it made a loud funny noise seemed to slow down even though throttle was still at 3/4. I backed of the throttle off instantly and boat continued to move forward in slow speed but every time i got back on the throttly it made that crazy noise again so left motor in slow and got back home ok. Once home i put engin in neutral and reved it up and it seemed ok, any ideas

check your prop see if you didnt spin the hub, might need to have prop re hubbed, fyi its a bad idea to run you motor at high RPM when it is not under a load, thats a good way to blow a motor.

When it slowed down from the noise, did the engine rev up?
