Do I need a special meter for that? I have a digital meter. What setting do I put it on to go about checking the dva reading?

You need manufactured dva adapter or you can assemble one yourself, there is a thread on this site somewhere to build it, I will search for the link for you, I built one myself, cost less than $10. If you have to replace the trigger flywheel has to come off.

I cannot find a trigger replacement part for a 1986 35HP. It goes from 30 to 40 Hp on all parts list.

Here is the link to build your own dva
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=180482

CDI sells them as well, they call them a peak reading adapter.
http://www.cdielectronics.com/Products.aspx?Criteria=5

and here is another link

First I would check the wiring on the trigger, once you get flywheel off, check inner hub magnets, I highly doubt this is your problem as only occuring on one cyl.

If I had to bet my life on it, I would say your trigger is the problem.

Also get a manual, once trigger is replaced, you will have to check/adjust timing.

Glad to help
