Seems you can't find a pic or a super detail diagram on what position the reverse cam is on the shifter shaft. Anyone out there got this info, my reverse locks don't catch the bar, someone replaced the impleller and must have dropped the cam off and its not in the right place. even a drawing will help.

Here is a link to a picture of the cam:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts/2496.cfm

Click on it to blow it up further.

You see the edge where the sliding ramp reaches the top, this edge should be aligned forward (12 o'clock) when the LU is in neutral position, (prop spins freely in either direction). In this position, the middle of the very flat surface on top of the cam will be in about the 1 o'clock position.Because it is designed to lock in neutral and reverse, the actuating rod sits up on the flat surface when neutral or reverse is selected. When you select forward, the rod must unlock, so the rod slides down the ramp, unlocking the reverse lock hooks and goes into forward gear.

Once it is on, you can go ahead and install, making sure the boat and the LU are in the same gear.

Does this make sense to you, it almost confuses me.

Gerry:

Sorry to intrude in someone else's post and you gave me the same answer in my post where I had the same problem. I have gone thru your exact instructions time after time and in neutral with LU off prop spins freely either direction and shaft does not spin. Cam slide top is a 12 oclock with center of the flat approximately at 1 O'Clock looking down from the rear of the motor. I put the cam in "FORWARD" and prop free spins with a clicking noise in forward and shaft is not spinning but the prop and shaft turn in the opposite direction "Reverse".

I went back to neutral one click of the cam and the prop spins freely in either direction. Turn the cam to next indent and the props spin but so does the drive shaft, in either direction. The the last index is reverse again. The only time the prop spins the drive shaft in forward it will also spin it reverse. When the cam is turned off neutral to where the shift shaft slides down the ramp the only way the prop will turn the shaft is in reverse.

I don't understand what you mean by the shaft spinning. Presumably you are talking about the driveshaft. In trying to get the cam setup correctly do not even concern yourself with the driveshaft. Thats why I say to use finger pressure only to rotate the prop.

Therefore, only using finger pressure to rotate the prop,

Forward: Prop will turn (ratchet) CW but will not turn CCW
Neutral: Prop will turn freely in either direction
Reverse: Prop will not turn in either direction except for the amount of gear mesh

Here is a link to the condensed version of the service manual. Let the page load for several seconds and then download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived. This one is from 1985 but I just want you to see the picture.

You will see a good picture of your setup in Figure M10-38

Is this right? I am in neutral. I took this revese cam off to clean out the gunk, thinking it could only go back one way! Stupid me! It does not look like it did when I took it off.

It looks to me like it's 180* rotated - lift it off and set it back on ramp forward.
