Front wheel drive means, if the boat is too heavy you might lose traction, & and up in the drink! It's not exactly like a truck.

I would be looking in the 18 ft range to save a bit of weight, but you wont be over your tow rating with most boats these sizes. I have a 19ft with a 4.3l and trailer/boat/gas/gear I'm under 3,000lbs. Your engine and transmition is where you might struggle over traction. If it's a 4 cylinder I wouldn't tow more than a jet ski. If its a 6 you should be ok but gas mileage will hurt. When launching don't enter a real steep ramp look for a more gradual ramp to prevent any slipping and the possible accident from getting stuck

19 ft bayliner 195 with a 3.0L (Classic style) is only around 3K on the trailer. Dry weight of the boat is around 2100.

Also is there a way to set up the account so when someone posts on the thread it shoots me an email. I am sure I am just not seeing it.

Yep. At the top of your first post there's a category Thread Tools that has a drop down menu. Click on subscribe to thread, then the drop down menu for Notification Type, click "Instant Notification thru e-mail".

Here's a checklist when buying a boat...

I would say that price is high for that old a boat with such a small engine. I had an 1987 Bayliner with a 2.3 Ford and OMC outdrive. It was underpowered and the boat suffered from neglect and didn't seem to be built very well. That 1986 probably has the 2.3 Volvo engine with the Volvo outdrive, better for parts availability but still under powered.

You may wish to look for something slightly newer in the 17-18 ft range with a 3.0 engine. More power than the 2.3L but still on the light side for towing. Stay away from OMC (due to parts availability) and as others have said when shopping for an older boat the key is the condition of the boat. Even a clean and well maintained older boat can have a rotten core and would at minimum be a major project.

Good luck!

And Ford engines. Neither OMC not Ford has been in the marine I/O market for about 15 years. The one exception to the warning against OMC is the OMC 'Cobra SX' (and ONLY the Cobra SX) outdrive, which was marketed during the years that OMC and Volvo-Penta were partners. The Cobra SX and V-P SX are the same drive, and still well supported by Volvo-Penta.

Your best all-around bet will be a GM-based block (3.0, 4.3, 5.0, 5.7) mated to a Mercruiser or Volvo-Penta outdrive.

One last caution - when you see a '5.0' make sure it's a GM 305 and not a Ford 302. If you can't figure out which it is, GM puts the distributors at the rear of the motor- Ford mounts them in the front.

Good luck!

I'll say that as crazy as it sounds, I really like the 80's and 90's Bayliner style. They brought boating down to a very affordable price point and while looking at them today it may not seem it but back in the 1980's our Bayliner was a nice boat. We'd get compliments when it was new all the time on it like 'hey loser, nice boat'. All kidding aside, if one of these older Bayliners was on my list, I'd seek out an outboard and avoid the I/O for multiple reasons. I still think that 1989 Bayliner Cobra was about the coolest boat around. Of course that Caravelle being only a handful of years newer is in a completely different league.

Also, I've towed with a minivan (albeit my rig was overweight) and I've got some neutral things and some negative things to say about it as detailed in some of the above posted links.

I have towed with my GMC Safari van with no problems but it is more like a truck than most minivans. I think the tow limit on it is 5000lbs. Some boats are lighter than others. My 20' Crownline has a dry weight of 3100lbs and that is before the added Bravo. I would guess with the dual axle trailer and loaded the total is pretty close to 4500lbs.
