I just got an 85 Yami 90 HP installed on my 86 Procraft 16.5 bass boat. I set it up on the 2nd hole from the top aligning the top of the lower unit about 1 inch above the bottom of my boat. Got all tach set up and took it out hole shot is pretty good and rides good on plane with no ventilation at the prop, but for some reason at WOT the reading on my tach is pretty close to max at 6500-7000 rpm. Is it just that I need a new tach? Do I need a bigger prop? Do I need to set my motor down a bit to the top hole? It idles at 1200 rpm.

Re: 1985 Yamaha 90ETLK setup

Normal maximum RPM range should be 4500 to 5500RPM's, with the idle about 750RPM's, give or take 50RPM's. Maybe the pole setting screw on the back of your tachometer is in the wrong position, giving you a false high reading. You may try different settings with a small slot-head screwdriver until hopefully your Tachometer reading seems more normal. Good Luck!
