I bought a used boat last year to spend time with my kids and did not have any issues. At the end of the season i took it to a local marine shop and had it winterized. I took it straight from there to storage. i found out later that a green colored liquid was leaking below the outdrive. i thought is was the antifreeze they used for winterization. When i took it out of storage i took it back to the marine dealer to find out what happened. They told me that they use the pink antifreeze so it could not be the winterization. I told them that i needed to change the oil in the outdrive and they said for me to use 90W gear lube in the lower unit and SAE 30 in the engine. i have changed both but now i am showing a leak coming from the upper bellow on the outdrive and it is the gear lube. i am new to boating and would appreciate any info as to what is causing this and how to fix it.

He told me that he works on Volvo Penta's but i looked on the Volvo web page and he is not listed. What oil should i put in the lower unit? It the 280 manual you provided compatible with my 270 that i have? What could be causing the gear lube to leak from the upper bellow? My brother in law suggested that i take it to the lake and run it to see if it all seats up and stops the leak but i am not sure that is a good idea.

You've got a bad seal in the upper gear box. This bad seal is allowing the outdrive lube to leak into the bellows. Running it this way could result in outdrive damage is the outdrive oil gets to low. Motor oil in the outdrive, as stated above.

Find a different mechanic to reseal the upper gear box.
