1985 15 hp does not have a starter pawl. It has a gear that runs up a helix, what is your model #

I thinks he is talking about the STARTER INTERLOCK ( red plastic ) to prevent cranking with too much throttle.-----And the washer must be in the proper place at the bottom of the main bolt.-----And tab on the bottom of the cup must go into the hole for proper location.----Confirm all of the above.

Yes - that spring that I believe attaches to the starter lockout goes on there to create pressure to put it back in the open position. I think. Just guessing. I just don't know. how to install it correctly.

It needs to go on the opposite side of the post on the recoil. It should push the red arm away from the recoil. As the throttle advances it will push the red arm into the recoil.

Here is a pic of the starter rewind showing the red arm. inside it in a hole on the arm is a metal spring that goes through the red arm and comes out on the bottom of the red arm. i dont know what the use of the spring and if it is even working correctly or in the right place. Sorry im probably not the most descriptive with this reply. Jeff

You need a new spring for that pawl.----The red pawl is on the correct side.-----The new spring will be on this side of the metal post.

Hello racerone. Jeff again. The long end of the spring is on the underside of the red arm. do you think i can get some needle nose pliers and just grab it and extend it to the metal arm? Will that longer piece be on the outside of the post or attach on the inside of the post. Thanks Jeff

picture helped out alot. I see how the spring lays up against that post. and it looks to me like the small hook on the spring that touches the backside of the metal post does not hook to the post it just lays beside the post. big help thanks again Jeff
