What’s up everyone as I metioned in a pervious post I have a ‘85 evinrude 8hp. When taking off the impeller from the driveshaft, the drive shaft popped out from the lower unit. I real installed it by just pushing it back down into the lower unit. I installed the new water pump kit and everything works great. Pumps water goes into gear just fine. My only worry is that when the drive shaft came out I could see the lower unit oil down in the hole. This shouldn’t cause my lower unit to leak now right ?

The danger is that you can damage the seals (# 27). If you now find signs of water in the oil you may have done that.

if you pulled the drive shaft and saw oil "down the hole" I would say that it was expected.

Finding no loil "down the hole" would have been a dry GC :-(

Maybe aware of this, but the shaft key for the impeller is missing in your picture. If you don't have it in hand, will want to be sure it didn't drop into the gear case.

Is your motor running like a top now ??-----Is it pumping water and staying cool ??-----If yes , then just go fishing.

Yes it pumps water great new impeller kit really made a difference. Stays cool like it should runs normal. Just gonna run it a few times then check my gear oil hopefully all is well. Thanks for the info

So I went to change my lower unit fluid today. The first picture (on the left) was when I first drained the oil after it had been sitting all season. the second picture (on the right) was after I added new gear oil, ran it in a bucket of water for a few hours then checked the oil again and it came out almost like a bright yellow. Leak ?

time to do pressure testing to find out which seal is leaking ... usually the prop shaft seal goes due to monofilament looped around the shaft .. pull the prop and check it visually while testing see video.... . Gc should hold 10 psi or so for 5-10 minutes

some just change oil mid season some do the full reaseal

Always replace the oil before freeze -up if stored in cold climate zone

There is usually a bit of air above the oil.-----It gets blended in with the oil.------The tiny bubbles that make the oil look " milky "------Let that oil sit for a week or so and see what happens.

I'm surprised you just "pushed the shift shaft" and it went into place. I have to loosen the two screws holding the gears in, slipping it out a little and then drop the shaft. I have no idea how you got it to drop.
