QBhoy i gotta disagree with ya on tha oiler.. merc kept tha basic design around for over 21 years so ta me thats not a bad design.. tha main reasons for failures was/is ta poor maintance and/or over heat of tha motor which weakens tha ring gear. so ta me generlizin' tha thing as a whole is not an actual fact..... how many have you owned that gave up tha ghost???. i've run tha V6 since 1976 and only problem i had and or dealt was for above reasons............ jmo
Hi duke dog.
I may stand to be corrected, but as far as I understand it, there are slight variances in the design between these particular motor’s pump design…compared to say a similar or slightly later era 3 cylinder 90hp for example. I’ve just known of far too many in the local to go wrong over the last few decades. I’d even say that almost all of them around here have had their system bypassed by now. Favouring pre mix. Just the v6 black max type engines, I’m referring to. My 87/88 black max v6 blew up in a horrible way when I was a younger man. Traded get in for parts for a nearly new (at the time) 1997ish 150 v6 (with the trim switch on the cowal). Without being certain if those later models had the same issue…the very first thing I did was by pass the oiler. She lasted all the years I had her and more. Still going as far as I know.
Fast forward to the current days…I have a one early 150 v6 again. Had her for about 6/7 years now. She’s pre mixed too. In fact, I’m almost sure that any I know of are now running 50-1 in the tank.
Had a few 70-90hp Merc over the years. Those that had oiler systems…I let them be and just made sure the fittings and lines were always as they should be. Never had an issue with that type. Just the v6 ones.
But hey….im sure one could argue that I should have inspected the pump and its supply etc etc more closely, all those years ago. Was likely fairly naive to it all back then. But like I say…wasn’t just me to have issues.
Anyway. All the best Dukedog.
