1985 bayliner capri

I've been interested in buying a boat for years now. One has come up for sale up the road from my home. It is a 1985 bayliner capri. The guy selling it was asking 1800 for it. The engine runs great, he did let it run for me. I noticed a soft spot in the floor near the engine. It has been left in the weather. Seats are ruined, and you can clearly see water damage in places. The only real soft spot i felt was in the back. It is a good looking boat, just needs cleaning up. I dont know the extent of the water damage. I am interested in replacing the deck myself. I have friends that are master carpenters and would help me. I called the seller and offered him 1000 dollars. then went to 1200. He said he would only go as low as 1500. Advice please? Thank you in advance. I am a novice here so any information will help.

I've only had a few boats in my life, but I know when we were looking at boats in 2003, Bayliner was "more boat, less money" They were decent, but not as well put together or as sharp (My opinion, no offense to Bayliner owners) as our Four Winns is. If there is a soft spot in the floor, it's going to require time and money, so I would check your local Craigslist for other ones too, who knows, you may find one you like a lot more.

I would RUN away from that boat. I have a 96 Bayliner that is in great condition - however, I still see so many "flaws" in the boat that would be SERIOUS trouble if it hadn't been stored indoors for 14yrs.....

Read Jay's thread about his SeaRay NIGHTMARE on this forum - that is EXACTLY what you are in for if you buy this boat....GUARANTEED! Not to mention the $$$$ you will drop on the interior - and engine components that Jay didn't have to do....(Just because the motor runs doesn't meant it is in working order!)

You are looking at a hefty sum of cash to get that boat in shape.....That guy should pay YOU to take it!!!!

I would look at other options. If it has been out in the elements and there is a soft spot then there will be more damage lurking underneath the deck. Rotten stringers and transom more than likely. You would be looking at minimum 2k for deck, stringer and transom replacement. Thats with your labor.

Unless you are looking for a project. But the price would have to be really good.
