I recently inherited a 1985 50hp Mariner on a 16ft Princecraft, and when I bought it, the hydraulic pump was seized and not working. I managed to find a functional one from a 79 mercruiser, same pump, so I know all is well there. However, I went to hook it up, swapped out the valve control from the 2 hose mercuiser to my 4 hose mariner, pressured up the system and the motor went up great, but when coming down, the pump started leaking from the bottom of manifold plate that goes between the valve body and valve control. I have taken the unit apart, cleaned all the seals, the plate, ensured all the screws were tightened properly, went through everything and all seems to be in working order. It does not leak when going up, just when going down.
When I examined the manifold plate, there were 4 holes on it, one that is relatively large, followed by two that are smaller and same size, and lastly, one that is the size of a pin-hole. I currently have it installed so that the pin hole aligns with the two holes that have an oblong/oval shape. Is this correct? could this be a source of my problem?
HELP! I'm rebuilding this boat and this system is holding me up... or if worse comes to worse, is there a way to change out the hydraulics for a gas assist lift.
