Hello all. I just recently purchased my boat that has a 1985 115HP Evinrude on it. When I was testing everything out to buy it, when lifting and lowering the motor, almost all the way up or almost all the way down it would start clicking. I assumed this was just from sitting and figured after I worked it for a while it would go away. Well I've taken the boat out twice now and yesterday it started getting worse. It clicks now about half way down. Also if you are raising it and then want to lower it back down you have to hold the down button for a while and it sucks those 2 pistons in one at a time and then starts going down. Is this due to not enough fluid in it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can easily check if there?s enough fluid by removing the reservoir plug when it is all the way up and check, oil has to be at sight thru hole, if it is below the hole, refill til you see it just pouring out. do not overfill. If fluid level is correct, my guess is that the tilt piston seal is bad. You probably need to change all seals in your trim. But first of all, open the relief valve and check if the motor swings freely all the way up and down, so there?s no chance that it has stuck swivel bracket bushings....good luck!

Thank you for your reply, I will try to check the fluid level tonight. If fluid needs to be added. What do I add? Just regular hydraulic fluid? or I have heard transmission fluid, is this correct?

You should be able to use Dex 2 or 3, or power steering fluid!

Could that be why the 2 small pistons go in one at a time? I didn't get a chance tonight to try to add fluid to it. Will try tomorrow.

Will it go all the way up and then down without stopping and clicking ??

The two small pistons will go in one at the time; that's normal.

It will go all the way up and all the way down but it clicks while it is going, the clicking is coming from the main cylinder that lifts and lowers it. Also I noticed yesterday as it was going down, when It got closer to being all the way down, I let go of the button and it slowly kept going down on its own like it had no pressure.

Grease your tilt tube (that's the big one with 2 grease nipples that the motor hinges up and down on) and put some oil around the pin at the top of the tilt ram, I use a bit of tcw3 on the end of a screwdriver or give it a spray with wd40.

So I picked up some Power tilt and trim fluid from my local marine store (only went that route because the screw is actually on the side of the reservoir and this bottle has a tip on it so I can inject it in there). So now I go to undo the screw and I cant get it to turn. The head of the large screwdriver i am using just keeps slipping out of it. I am going to try again tomorrow. Maybe i'll soak it with some wd40 and then tap on it a bit when I get home and hope I can get it loose.

Thank you all for your replies by the way. I will let you know what I find once I get the screw out as far as fluid level.

So I finally got the screw out and added a little fluid but not much was needed. So I'm back to square one. I did take a video with my phone of the sound. Not sure if it will help. Still clicking though.....

Sound like no grease at swivel bracket bushings or a rusted tilt cylinder pin...trim hears ok....

Where can I find the relief valve?

The clicking sounds and feels like its coming form inside the main cylinder.

+1. As well the little balls on the top of the rams should be greased as well.

No harm on clean & grease anyway...It feels "like", how about if you disconect the pin and try only tilt/trim?

Meaning run it up and down unattached to the motor and see if it clicks?
