The orientation of the pump in the velvet drive changes the rotation of the transmission/output for fwd/rev

The cut of the gears on the distributor/camshaft is how the rotation of the distributor shaft is maintained to be the same for lh and rh rotation engines.

Ford did the same thing on their 335 series engines
Yes pump orientation does that, can change input rotation to match engine rotation, otherwise you have no oil pressure in the trans and it wont even work, no clutch pressure.

Velvet drives with gear reduction units can also reverse output spin from engine spin, or keep it the same direction, it depends on the gear reduction design. My 2.93 to 1, has the same direction, while this 1.88 or 1.91 to 1 does reverse output from input direction. All velvet drives with no gear reduction are all same direction.
And you can not just run a velvet drive all the time in reverse gear as a kluge to fix prop rotation. They have a bushing that will wear out, and the gear ratio is also different (from what I have read)

V Drives, I dont know much about prop direction from engine direction. It is likely reversed, as in input is LH, output is RH etc...

No, likely wont bother. engine is confirmed turning the wrong way, as in LH when needs to be RH. I don't want to do extra work. Plus it explains why when I removed some pugs, they were totally dry and clean, even after spraying in start fluid and a little extra gas. The intake manifold blew the gas back out the carb, spitting it out when cranking over cause it was acting like the exhaust side. When distributor turns CCW, since it also turns the oil pump, then engine wont be having any oil pressure, and that is incompatible with life.
did you replace starter with one with incorrect spin? If starter was just rebuilt, then the spin should be the same as before for the motor's turn. I had a pair of 351 Windsors in MC inboards. We carelessly rebuilt one motor w/o changing piston position for slinging oil. Complicating was the fact that the Holly 4 b kept flooding. We kept gaulding pistons. Fnnnn nightmare! I feel your pain.

It runs!
Put new correct rotation starter on,
