I just bought a 1984 KingFisher 156 with original johnson 40. There were some soft spots so hey why not replace, its my first boat and it will only take a weekend, haha then I tore it apart and found this forum. For two weeks I feel it has come a long way.

Both front and rear deck were rotten as are the 1/4in boards around the foam blocks in the rear of the boat (see pic 46-49). Foam is bone dry surprisingly.

My questions are do I really need to put the rear deck back in the way it was - a few inches off of the fiberglass deck/hull (mock up in pictures 41-43). There are no stringers or foam under the decks. The front has the incline of the hull and needs the deck for looks but the rear I want to build a box to house the gas tank and battery away from sight, then put two folding seats on the top of the bench.

Once the carpet glue is off I am painting the deck with Interlux Interdeck on top of Interlux's no sand fiberglass primer. I tried acetone and a scraper to get off the glue but it's not working.

I have pictures on my photobucket account:

I have searched high and low and cannot find any pictures of my boat online from other members/owners. Anyone have any leads? It's a lonely world with a KingFisher so far!

Re: 1984 KingFisher 156 restoration / update

I wanted to post a progress post to keep track of where things are and to do's.

9-27-09 Complete so far

-Cut out front and rear decks, both rotten.
-Cut out both front and rear pedestal fishing seats, kept the seats threw away the bases (filled with wet foam, and had bent swivels)
-Cut out live well, wood was rotten and I feel it was where the rot initially started.
-Tore out the carpeting
-Cut around the foam boxes in the rear of the boat, all 1/4 inch plywood was rotten, foam is good and will be covered with new wood and fiberglassed back in.

Vision
-Build bench for the rear to house the battery and gas tank, put two folding seats on the removable top. Divide the compartment between the bat and gas, otherwise it may explode?
-Build up a storage compartment where the livewell used to be in front of the console and have a seat that looks to the left.
-Install a pedestal seat up front with a metal, adjustable pedestal instead of the 12inch fiberglass pyramid originally installed.
-This vision would yield real seating for five and update the layout a bit.

Ideas / Questions
-Old carpet glue is not coming off with acetone and plastic scraper, might try a stiff metal scraper or?
-Wondering if the rear deck is necessary, might just build a box with a tunnel down the middle for water to access the bilge area.
-How will I fit the 3/4in decking plywood to the inclined hull area? The piece I removed had a lot, a lot! of sanding done to it to fit perfectly. The forward edges were sanding over a good 6in area to fit.
