Ok, I finally got my motor to run today for the first time. I have a couple concerns:
Im not too sure how long it has been since the motor ran last and it got pretty smokey in my garage today. (not anything out of the ordinary, but today it was because of the motor, lol) It was exhausting light smoke through the two holes in the top of the exhaust housing. Smoke was also bobbling out of the water, quite a bit of it. Is this normal for a motor that probably sat around for a long time???
The entire lower unit was submerged. I filled the gearcase with ATF, and ran it at light speeds for 5 minutes to clear up any sludge in the gearcase. When i turned the motor off and took it out of the water I noticed that the water was very dirty. There was even dried up bugs floating in it. There was also a film of oil or something on the top of the water. I figured this was residue from the smoke bubbles. I then drained the ATF and there was no sediment or water in it - good. But I noticed that a muddy-oily substance was draining out of a few small holes in the lower unit. I replaced the water pump might I add. What purpose does these holes serve???
To reiterate:
-Alot of smoke
-Oil and sediment in the water
-Muddy-oily substance leaking from holes in lower unit
Any feedback is appreciated!!!!
