Ok, I finally got my motor to run today for the first time. I have a couple concerns:

Im not too sure how long it has been since the motor ran last and it got pretty smokey in my garage today. (not anything out of the ordinary, but today it was because of the motor, lol) It was exhausting light smoke through the two holes in the top of the exhaust housing. Smoke was also bobbling out of the water, quite a bit of it. Is this normal for a motor that probably sat around for a long time???

The entire lower unit was submerged. I filled the gearcase with ATF, and ran it at light speeds for 5 minutes to clear up any sludge in the gearcase. When i turned the motor off and took it out of the water I noticed that the water was very dirty. There was even dried up bugs floating in it. There was also a film of oil or something on the top of the water. I figured this was residue from the smoke bubbles. I then drained the ATF and there was no sediment or water in it - good. But I noticed that a muddy-oily substance was draining out of a few small holes in the lower unit. I replaced the water pump might I add. What purpose does these holes serve???

To reiterate:
-Alot of smoke
-Oil and sediment in the water
-Muddy-oily substance leaking from holes in lower unit

Any feedback is appreciated!!!!

The small holes let water drain out when storeing mtr. Best thing I can tell you is put it on a boat and run the heck out of it. If you ran this in a barrel it's normal from what you described.

I have the same motor. As stated before, the motor probably just needs to be run. Here's mine...

Also, you should have a drain in the LU...

Ok, today I ran the motor and decarbonized the cylinders. After spraying liberally into the carb, i choked it out, then removed the plugs and sprayed into the cylinders. The lower plug was way dirtier then the upper plug; it was somewhat wet but it smelled like fuel.

After I let it sit for an hour I started it up and ran it at high throttle. I noticed water spraying from the exhaust holes.... This is disappointing. Someone please tell em this is normal and I am not getting water in my lower cylinder.. It was still very smokey and I fear its because water is leaking into the cylinder.
