1981 70 hp envinrude idling problem

the boat will not crank unless i use the cold start choke once i do this if i dont shift and go the engine dies, the engine runs great once you get it in gear and has no problems unitil u slow to nuetreul then it shuts off just had the engine serviced with new power pack and coils any suggestions

Sounds as if you need to overhaul the carbs. do a complete overhaul and make sure all passages are clean. Get an oem manual for your motor it will save you allot of headaches

thanks for the info now my problem is somewhat different the throttle controls that come from the gear to the motor there was a screw that i tighten and two turn knobs for forward and reverse the engine idles now and will go in forward but not reverse What now

first make sure you have a good base motor, compression and spark test. if good replace all fuel lines, with alcohol resistant fuel line. carbs to the fuel tank. then properly clean the carbs, and reassemble with new carb kits.

thanks I think i solved the issue with the idling now sense i messed with the screws that in in from the center console control to the back of the engine i get idle and i get forward but no reverse now can you help with that Ihave tried readjusting the screws back to where they were but still no reverse any help appreciated

disconnect shift cable at motor. now,you place the shift on the motor in neutral, and the shifter in neutral. now you adjust the trunion nut on the motor end of the cable, to match the motor connection, with out moving the motor shift lever. REMEMBER cable has to match motor, not motor match cable.

this may be out of my league considered i have never worked on a motor before ,ibam not real sure which one is the shift cable how difficult is this any suggestions thanks

disconnect them and then shift it. which ever one moves first is the shift cable.
