newly acquired motor. i had cooling issues so i pulled the head. this is what i found. question, what and why is there rubber in the passageway? should i leave them there or pull them out? i would think this is what was creating a over heat situation.

Those rubber pieces are called water deflectors and should be replaced. They may have been the cause of your over heat problem. Go to shopevinrude.com and look up your parts.
