Good day folks.
I just picked up a 1980 Holiday 181 with an OMC 140hp and OMC outdrive. Up until last winter, the boat had been stored in a double car port. Unfortunately this last winter the roof collapsed and broke both side windows. I first came across it on Kijiji and his price was $1500.00. The following morning I looked and it was $600.00. I messaged the seller and met up to look at it. The only thing I did was see if the engine would turn. Offered $500 and the deal was made.

I picked the boat up today and have just started cleaning it out. There are leaves and spruce needles everywhere as well as the glass from the broken side windows. I removed the engine cover and rear seats. The transom is rock solid but the floor has a couple soft spots. The hull number indicates build date of October 1980. I pulled the dipstick and the oil looks like it hasn’t even circulated through the engine. I then removed the oil filler cap and put my finger in and rubbed it around. To my surprise my finger came out clean. The oil cap was spotless as well.

I have always wanted a Starcraft Holiday ever since my father bought his new back in 69. I redid a 16 1/2’ fiberglass boat last year that turned out great but I just don’t like the way it (doesn’t) handle rougher waters. I know from past experience that Starcraft hulls are very strong and can take quite a bit of abuse. As kids, my brothers and I proved it. I’m really looking forward to getting it back into shape and into the water. Once I have my post requirements I’ll post up some pictures.

Sounds like you have some work ahead of you on the old Holly but if it's a labor of love then the whole experience will be enjoyable.

The boat is cleaning up really nice. I’ll remove the side window frames and straighten them out and get new glass to put in them. It appears the previous owner was working in the engine compartment and doing work to the wiring. I’ll have to pull out the test light and meter to check things before I attempt to start it.

Maybe some of those more knowledgeable than I can help me with a question. What are the differences between a super sport ant a holiday? Is there a designation in the hull identification number to determine it?

Super Sport is an open bow rider. The HIN doesn't have any secret codes in it, unlike cars and truck VINs.

I'm not gonna try to sell you a boat! LOL

So in other words, they are the same boat just different configuration?

Pretty much. Open bow on the SS, closed bow on the holiday.

I worked on the boat the other day for a bit. The canopy frame was bent so I straightened it as best I could. All the curtains are good and just need cleaning. The outdrive was held up with ratchet straps and when released it dropped down. I checked the tilt clutch pack and found the conical washers installed wrong. Switched them around but it still won’t hold. I may try adding a shim or look online for a set of clutches.

The drive unit seems to be stuck as I cannot spin the prop freely in either direction while the shifter is in neutral. I’m now wondering if the previous owner tried to crank the engine over causing the 50a fuse to blow. Lots of things to look at before actually trying to start it up.

Has anyone found a reasonably close color match for the white Starcraft used?

Today I installed a tuneup kit and new coil. After a bit of cursing due to not noticing the wire from the points to the coil not connected. I hooked the wire up and she fired right up. Now that I know it runs, I’ll dive into the tilt not working. The plan is to get rid of the cheap solenoids and switch to continuous duty solenoids like the type we use on aircraft ground support equipment. I’m also going to try figuring out how to add fly back diodes to protect the solenoid coils from the fly back voltage.
Total cost of boat and parts is up to $628.76

You'd be better serced to talk about motor work over in the OMC I/O forum and keep this for boat & hull rehab.

You've got some challenges ahead if you plan to keep the OMC driveline. Different challenges, but a better I/O setup to swap to a Mercruiser I/O.

Good luck w your project, ask lots of questions and post plenty of pix

my wife has been cleaning the interior slowly and making progress. Any ideas on how to get the really bad spots clean? She is going to try a TSP solution as it’s always been a reliable cleaner for her.

Man, $500 was a steal for a “clean” dirty boat. Looks great minus that layer of dirt. And it runs! If OMC does it have the WLOD? (Learned that here). What are your plans for her after dusting her off?

My plan is to keep this and sell my 16 1/2’ fiberglass boat. This will suit my needs much better. It has the OMC.

This evening I started to look at the tilt/trim issues. I made sure my battery was fully charged and started the clean all the connections. As I was cleaning I noticed that the way it was wired there was no way it would ever work. The previous owner had the power in the wrong spot. Both tilt motor leads were attached to the solenoids with the bus bar in between in essence trying to raise and lower at the same time. The power lead the the trim solenoids was fed off the switched side of the tilt solenoid.
After cleaning and re-routing the wires, both motors now work.

my next step will be to dig into the tilt clutch pack and see why it won’t let the outdrive move.
