1980 4.5 evinrude outbaord help

My motor would be hard to start, maybe like 10pulls. When it did start it would only run for 30 secs then die. I took the motor to a local marine shop. When the guy tested it he had same problem and said the engine would start then die, said it was flooding/ plugs were wet. any idead?. He sadi i would need new fuel pump and carb clean kit. Any help would be needed, its to much for the service and would like to do myself.

Maybe try a different shop for a second opinion ?? Or buy an oem factory service manual and give it a try. The oem manual will help you out with any other probs you have on the mtr. Good investment.

compreaion test first,
second is check fuel pump, by supllying fuel from botle,

I pulled the carb and pump, just need to clean and replace. anything on the motor that would cause flooding?

Mine was the mixture adj Knob was removed and put on at wrong position . It would not adjust to get running . This motor has tank under hood ?

if the motor hasnt been properly stored in the off season, or has not been run in years, its very common for the float to seize to the pin, rust to accumulate in the bowl. ( ive seen them rusted through), and other crud in the carb that will cause your issues. start with the cheap stuff first.....do a PROPER cleaning of the carb and rekit it, you may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

the float seems to be ok when i looked at it, im planning on cleaning it with the kit soon, just need to find one.

Compression readings? The hard starting sounds like a starvation issue, not a flooding issue...

Well I ordered kit, bug just found out the fuel bladder was torn , could that be the cause?

Could that broken bladder cause the flooding and make the engine only run for 30 secs?
