Re: 1979 MFG Caprice Rebuild

Thought I would also post some pictures of us creating templates for the bulkheads since I couldn't find much documentation on this. Is a little crude but effective. We created the transom template by tracing the outside of the transom to get it close then trimmed it to fit.

You've got a templating leprechaun?

Sweet! Looks like he does nice work!

I won't be there for a while but is there a paint or some type of coating you should put in the engine compartment and around the gas tank? Mine was black to start with but I thought that might just be for looks? If not it might be to protect the glass from oil and gas?

Re: 1979 MFG Caprice Rebuild

Did anyone have any comments about the paint around the engine and fuel tank? I have the transom in now and will be putting the motor mounts, stringers, and bulkheads in this weekend. I have updated pictures and will be adding them later tonight.

Some people use Bilgecoat, others roll on Gelcoat, and still other use Rustoleum Professioal Oil Based paint. It's a good idea to use something and so it's basically your choice. IMHO Rolling on Gelcoat is easy and very durable.

Here are some updated pictures. I still need to PB the sides of the transom and add the 1708 but it is in there.

The last picture is a concept I had for replacing the MFG logo on the side, mine is cracked and falling off. What do you think?

Here are the stringers all laid out. Still have to PB and glass them in but it feels good to see how it will all look. Hope to hit it hard and get all the glassing done this weekend.

Yes I actually found a local distributor that has everything in stock at paints plus in Stover Missouri. I have already gone through 18 gallons of resin so I think I am going to need 15 more to get it all done. I have also been through 25 yards of csm 50" wide and some 1708. I do have all the wood for the floor cut out covered in csm and resin ready to put in the boat. I ran out of fumed silica or I would have got further last weekend. Should have everything ready to go for this weekend.

Looking good! What size boat is yours? I have a 19' 1978 caprice that I might need to do the same thing to. I like your seat choice too. Where did you get them from?

How many layers? What's the Beam width of your Boat? That seems like a lot of Resin for 25 yards of mat. 7 gallons should wet out 25 yards of 1.5 oz CSM. What kind of Resin are you using? What Price per Gallon? Would like to put in my Fact sheet for Later Reference since you're in Missouri.
