Hi I'm new to this forum and am in the process of buying a 1979 mariner 80hp with power trim to swap out my 1996 mercury force. There is nothing wrong with the force just need more power. This motor is in mint condition very clean inside and out, it looks to be a modern style outboard with low hours. paying $1500 (deal/no deal?)
My concerns are is this a good motor and will I be able to get parts in the near future if need be due to age?
I'm also concerned with the bolt pattern not matching up and if need be will have to purchase a fixed jack plate. This is going on a 16' aluminum boat with an all aluminum transom. Not really any options in filling and drilling holes. What depth jack plate would I be looking for? I seen they range from 4" up to 10" gap. Would I be able to get away with the 4" clearance if need be? Is there a better jack plate then another?
I also have a universal quick silver control and just replaced my throttle cables last season on the existing motor. Will I be able to use the existing controls and cables I have on boat and change link ends if need be or should I swap out the controls/cables too?
