1979 evinrude...help please

i have a 1979 evinrude 115hp motor and the shifter will not go into the reverse position..anyone help?

Just out of nowhere, or is this motor new to you, or had you been doing something to create this problem?

i had just bought the boat around a week ago..but no wen i bought it, it would not go past neutral

First off disconnect the shift and throttle cables from the mtr. Then try it. This will tell you if the prob is in the control box or the mtr.

Of course boobie means to try to shift it from the motor after the cable has been disconnected. I know that it seems that this would be given, but I actually had someone call me once with this problem, told him to disconnect shift cabe and then try it, so he did, from the control box, lol.

He called back and said it still wouldnt go into reverse, geesh, some ppl

What I meant was by disconnecting the cables you are seperating the control box from the mtr. You could have something wrong on the mtr or else something broke in the control box. This narrows it down as to what area the prob is in.

Motor running??? Sometimes you need to turn the prop by hand just slightly. It is fairly common if the motor is not running.
