Re: 1979 Chrysler 45 HP outboard NO POWER ON WATER OR UNDER LOAD

Ok after doing some research I need to know is there support to be a spring assist on float and also is there support to be a retaining clip on needle valve that attaches it to float basicly to hold needle up ,cause I have no sprig on float or anything attaching needle to float

Thanks

Pic 1 is the vent.#5 is a welch plug. Also to the right of the welch plug is a TINY welch plug.
Float pics look right.
No springs or connectors for the needle.
You say it starts and runs.If the piece of crap in the needle and seat didn't cause the problem.
Then I'd look somewhere else.
Then from the sounds of it.It's like there is a delivery problem.
The fuel pump. The connectors on the tank, the squeezie. The tank pickup?
What are the comp readings?
Carb soaks,if the needle/seat is left in.It can swell the rubber and won't allow fuel through.
It can take up to a week for the seal/rubber to shrink back.
Lots of people swear by Seafoam and other additives and carb soaks.I don't.

Read this before you put too much in.
I'll use the Ethanol stabilizer if I know I'm not gonna use the boat for a while.

Jerry Thanks for the info

Compression is 120 PSI on both cylinders

The chunk of trash I found under needle was enough to clog or stop flow I believe,
but to recap what ive done and what im going to do is

I have NEW Prime bulb installed and new tank fittings
I confirmed pickup tube is free and clear
I replaced fuel pump diagfram and gasket

I have carb kit coming this week and I will install all new parts in kit and reassemble carb
I did not let it soak last night cuase Im positive its flowing like it should
Im going to replace all fuel line as well when I reinstall carb cause thats where trash came from in line somewhere

I do have a new inline fuel filter installed so trash came after the filter

I will report finding and progress this weekend

thanks again

I will have to respectfully disagree with Jerry on the springs and clip. I have yet to see a Chrysler or Force without both. They are a PITA to put back in, and I have heard some just run without because of this. However, they are there for a reason. I know I could be wrong, as there were variations on design throughout the years, but I'm ready to bet money LOL! The carb kit should come with a spring for the float assist, and a needle with a retainer on it. If it does not come with these PM me and I will send you some for free. Hey, and if it doesn't come with a spring and clip on the needle I'll eat crow ;)

OK Final Report is in

IT WORKS GREAT !!!!!

Ok I'm really thinking that trash I found under needle houseing was main problem but
I did notice some other differences that might be a reason to use a new carb kit every so often .

Oh and By the way there was no springs in the carb kit i got (sorry tater76)

the needle that came with new kit didnt even have a slot or grove at top to except a spring or retainer but orginal needle i had did
and i did read and see the original setup had springs but guess they are not needed.

couple things I noticed was new needle had a rubber tip and new housing was brass where as the orginal setup the needle was all steel and the houseing had a rubber o ring in base of it to create a seal that o ring did not look all that great .
only bad thing with a rubber tip on needle is i could see it needing to be replaced at some point but thats easy enough.

The kit also had the gasket or spacer that goes below needle housing that i thought i had lost

I still didnt replace fuel line because after inspecting , it looked fine and was not cracking or deteriateing and was very plyable..

I did replace welch plug and the holes and cavity under plug was spotless and very very clean .

I believe bottom line was getting new needle and houseing and setting float to correct hieght .

that trash I found under needle housing may have been the problem the whole time I just didnt think to remove the needle housing when i had carb off to reset float hieght , but glad I replaced the needle and housing as orginals looked bad and like they needed to be replaced.

I want to thanks everyone who chimed in with very useful info and hope that someone with similar situation
can read this post and maybe benifit from our efforts

Now if someone could just point me in the direction of some CRAPPIE !!

Thanks agian guys

Hmmm.... guess I'm having crow for dinner ;) now you have me wanting to try the no spring or clip thing on my next rebuild. I wonder if there is truly and difference?? Either way, I learned something new today :)

Houston Houston We Are In Business!

Chad, I wish you and the Kids well with the Crappie. Remember they can be just as challenging as the Engine Tuning. You?ll just have keep working as with the engine as the Kids enjoy the outing.

Good Luck And Thanks for the good follow-up!

Hey guys, I know this post is old but it’s all I have found so far that is similar to the problem I have been having.

I have a 1981 Chrysler 45 that is flooding on the lower cylinder. It was running perfect for years then one day took her out and now will not rev out in forward. It acts like it’s running on one cylinder.

Will do compression test tonight to verify the right way but put both thumbs over both holes and both blew off equally. Both plugs spark equally too. They look just like the plugs on this forum, one is burning good and the other one is soaked in gas but still sparks good.

Took flywheel off and cleaned points and checked gaps to .020. All looked well to begin with. Fuel is fresh at 50:1. It was running perfectly fine the last time I took her out a couple weeks prior on the same tank of fuel.

Also cleaned carb and everything looked perfect.

I even bypassed the neutral safety switch and gave her full forward while turning over the engine and still maintained good spark on both plugs.

Any thoughts?

Check the fuel pump diaphram.
I think you have a hole in diaphragm or a bad diaphram.
The flooded cylinder sucks fuel through the diaphragm direct into the cylinder.
