Carpet Glue test #1.....I took a carpet sample and some Weldwood Outdoor Carpet Adhesive (solvent based) and stuck it to a piece of dirty, un-prepped aluminum I had laying around. It took a few days to fully set up, but, it's stuck for good. If I pull on it the carpet fibers come off the backing which stays stuck down to the aluminum. Test results on aluminum: Very Good!

Next, I need to test the same glue with a vinyl sample over epoxied wood. I do believe it should work there as well.

Next, I need to test the same glue with a vinyl sample over epoxied wood. I do believe it should work there as well.

Now take that piece of carpet on the aluminum and soak it in water for 3 hours to simulate a rain storm and the slow drying of your carpet, after the 3 hours pull on the carpet. If the adhesive still pulls the backing off the capert it's good, if the carpet comes off nearly intact you may want to consider a different adhesive.

Yep, I forgot to mention that part. From my reading research so far, this stuff is supposed to be unaffected by water. We will see.....

That sounds like the 3M 5200 of carpet glue :biggrin: Excellent.

Where the fumes as noxious as you expected?

Did it take the same amount of time to stop off gassing fumes as it did for it to full cure (dry)?

Hard to say at this point as I only did a couple square inches. There is definetly some odor though....

Does the installation instructions on the adhesive mention anything about rolling the carpet with a 150 lb. roller after installation?

If so you may want to seriously consider purchasing the roller with the red wheel in the pic below:

This tool is worth it's weight in gold and key to a long lasting carpet installation. It imbeds the carpet backing into the adhesive for a secure bond. The roller is about $35 at Home Depot in the flooring dept.

I found out what happens when you don't use one the hard way on my first boat carpet job:

Well, says a 75lb roller. Also, adhesive must develop "legs" before setting the carpet in it. I'm waiting for legs right now to set a vinyl sample on a piece of epoxied wood. Thanks for the input.

You'll definitely want to buy rollers for the carpet and the vinyl.

The smaller roller in the pic is a laminate roller and handy for tight spots and small pieces, also available at Home Depot.

I'm digging the experiments. That's the way to go for sure...a small investment to test but a big payoff when the stuff lasts near forever.

The carpet is still in the water and as of last night after 6 hours of soak it was unaffected.

The vinyl is still curing, but one issue I see is that this vinyl is kind of thick, like almost an 1/8" thick, and the small sample has a tendancy to curl. So with slow setting adhesive, this might be a problem. Not sure how a big sheet would react, but at the edges I would think it would want to curl. So we may have to get some contact cement and try that on the vinyl too.

Contact cement will help with the vinyl, but vinyl will inherently curl unless the edges are mechanically secured. Wrapping the vinyl around a piece and fastening the vinyl to the back is the best method to prevent curl. For edges that can't be wrapped with vinyl I suggest an aluminum or wood trim secured with rivets or screws to hold the edges and prevent curl.

Testing continued...

This is the carpet after a couple days in water, then dried out and, then me pulling all the fibers out. 99% of the backing is still stuck to the aluminum. The Weldwood Outdoor Carpet Adhesive (solvent based) worked great on aluminum.

Next, the vinyl on epoxied wood with the above adhesive. It stuck pretty good. I did peel it off, but, it took a lot to do it. Notice there is still adhesive on both halves. I think I may have been a little light on the amount of adhesive and maybe it could have cured longer. The only problem is the curling at the edges, but like Jig said, it should be fastened anyway.

Tonight I picked up some DAP contact cement (solvent based) and tried it on another vinyl sample and epoxied wood. It stuck instantly. I'm going to let it fully cure a day and then try to peel it off. This stuff is nasty.

The only round thing I had handy was a rusty pipe to roll it, so that's why the vinyl looks crappy.

If you end up using the contact cement make sure it's in a well ventilated area and no open flames. The stuff usually works well but the fumes are killer!

Well, the contact cement held pretty good too. I'd have to say though I like the outdoor carpet glue better. Not near the smell and you have a little time to get it laid right.

I epoxied a couple scraps to do another test. I'm going to use the recommended trowel and see if I get an even better result.

So, I made up my mind tonight (actually got permission from the wife) to order an 8' x 20' piece of "Alpha" vinyl in grey(its sold on a pontoon parts website) and an 8' x 30' piece of midnight star (grey) 20oz. carpet for the hull sides and front seating boards. It's free shipping, FedEx I guess and the website says I'm in the 1-day zone so I'll prolly see it this week!!

I have a little smoothing and epoxy touch up to do on the deck still, and need to scuff up the hull sides because there is some overspray left over from paint. Also need to get some aluminum to fasten the vinyl at the edges.

What the heck DJ it's only money, from what you said in an earlier post the wide vinyl and carpet are pricey. Check out Home Depot, last time I was in there I found a real good assortment of aluminum extrutions, in colors, anodized and polished.

Ya know, I actually found the perfect extrusion for the bottom of the side panels. Have you ever noticed what bathroom stalls and urinal dividers are held together with? Usually nice "t"'s or "L"'s, brushed and anodized. I'll have to check out HD.

Anyway couple questions...

I'm sanding the epoxied deck again to get rid of overspray and scuff it for the flooring. Would it be right to clean it with acetone?

Also, I started scuffing the aluminum to get rid of the rest of the old glue and for better stick. I'm using a 40 grit disk on an orbital. It's not going to bad, but anyone got a better idea?

That patch prolly took 10 minutes, so It'd probably take a few hours to do the whole boat.
