Just saw this posting tonight...I'll have to take some pictures of what I did for my marine antenna ...
last year I bought a Marine radio at a garage sale...came with a 4ft antenna...
bought a new 4ft extension for the antenna and added it to the passenger
side/port side...next to the windshield...
I think I read somewhere you don't want the antenna too close to the marine radio and
I wanted the radio located with all the other controls..on the starboard side...
That 4ft extension is really thick..with 8 ft of antenna putting torque on where the
ratchet mount was bolted to the aluminum gunnels...I was a little worried..
had a stainless steel piece made that went from the underside of the gunnel to the floor
to reduce all that torque at the gunnel.

If you look closely at your ratchet mount...you probably have the option of running your antenna
cable though the bottom of your antenna and through the threaded base of the ratchet mount if you
like the looks of that better...

I'll try to take some close up pictures of what I did on my boat for the marine antenna tomorrow
and post them here...

Went to Shakespeare's web site...their instructions say to have the antenna AT LEAST 3ft away from the radio...

here are more antenna mount pictures
When I laid the antenna in the down position the teeth of the SS antenna mount
did not line up with each other ..if I lined up the teeth and tightened the ratchet
the antenna would be suspended in the air without touching the gunnel...
leave the ratchet loose and the antenna would lay on the gunnel but the tip
would swing back and forth, port ..starboard..port.. starboard.. port
If you look at the first two pictures below I used this piece of rubber to
brace the antenna and restrict its movement in the down position...

If you decide to have a welder shorten your ratchet mount...allow room for the
ratchet lever to rotate and tighten ..my lever is in the 8 o'clock position when tight..

Yep, very beefy,...made out of Stainless Steel...used wood to quickly check what length
and angles I needed for the brace. After finding out what I needed..went to the metal
recycling yard picked out some stainless steel pieces ...cut them to shape and
then took the parts to a local welder that welds stainless steel... This may have been way
overkill/over engineered/...but I'm not worried about the torque where the base of ratchet mount is bolted
to the gunnel anymore..

Been working on a few things. First my rear seat/battery box, got a couple uprights machined. This structure will be so overbuilt to the point I may be able to add a ski pylon later (somehow). It's solid 1x2 aluminum. More progress to come this week.

Also been working on side panels, I biscuit jointed (with epoxy) two pieces together and added a layer of cloth on both sides.

Got a first coat on the back sides today...

Question: I'm contemplating putting Nautilux vinyl on my deck instead of carpet, but I have all these rivets, see?

I'll bet this is going to be a lot of work getting it smooth enough to where the vinyl will look flat??? How would I go about that?

I dunno if you feel like drilling all those out but...

I counter sunk my rivets then filled with epoxy and sanded smooth.

Yeah, looking back that was probably a mistake not doing that, I'll have to think about this. Did the rivets you used have a c'sunk head? Or did you use the regulars and just c'sunk the wood?

Hindsight is always 20:20. I've never regretted putting more work into something that turned out right, but I've always regretted the times I didn't put the additional work in when it didn't turn out right. - Grandad

Well, what I'll prolly do is drill, c'sink & install a new one right next to the current ones, then drill the old ones out and fill with epoxy.

Can I put the flooring vinyl on the sides as well (inner hull)? Will it stick to aluminum?

Man, I hate redoing work, especially when there are so many other things to be done, eh.

I've not worked with vinyl but I know I have seen the other guys stick vinyl to alum, hopefully they can stop by for the heads up on that.

Don't know if this is much help, but my Jet Star had vinyl glued to aluminum on the dash tray when I got it, and it looked to be stuck on with contact cement. It was stuck pretty good.

I put the flooring vinyl on the hull sides.

Maybe another option....

Two good whacks with a hammer, perfectly flush. I'll do some testing on some scraps and determine if this weakens the hold or not. Maybe this plus adding a few c'sunk ones? It doesn't look distorted, just pushed into the wood now.

Yah the head can be flush but the fat part at the other end will be loose now since it's pushed down. I'd be nervous that it may lift a little and make your vinyl work look bumpy. Maybe not though with the adhesive to keep it stuck down? Dunno.

Good point. I'll have to see if it like you said pushes the whole rivet down or just compresses the tube of the rivet. If the latter, I would think I'd be OK, but if it loosens it, then yeah, not so good.

Smacking the rivet on top to countersink it will surely drive the rivet loose at the bottom and loosen the floor. Then the floor will move up and down and the loose rivet will mar your new Nautolex. The heads drill off pretty quick and using the same bit to countersink a new hole beside each will get the job done in a couple of hours, max. You'll feel better. - Grandad
