Wow Dave! Coming right along bud. Kinda funny seeing someone else experience the joys of 22 footer restoration....

I was seriously starting to get concerned about the amount of ss rivets I was going thru and reading thru this thread brings back memories!

Finally found someone to do bow rails for me so we went for a ride this morning to see him. The boat hasn't moved in over a year so it took lots of moving stuff to get it out of the garage. It's a tight fit with the windshield on:

Floor jack gets it low enough:

Snapped an outside pic at the bow rail place:

He said he only needed one old rail to make the new ones being they were pretty simple. Be done in 7/8 SS next week for $40-ish each. I already have all the fittings. Pretty happy with that.

Great news and good price. Lucky you found someone nearby who could do it. That's always worth a happy dance!

Good find on the rails, DP. That was close coming out of the garage. She looks good out in the sunlight.

Like I said, if you go with the aluminum ones...BUY THE MOELLER TOOL. It's like a 2 minute job.

Hey Dave, lil help here....

So I was just about to install my drain tubes and the Flanging Tool call for the use of the "Moeller Drain Fitting part #20848-001"

http://www.jmsonline.net/moe-020848001.htm

Did you use that? It really doesn't make any sense to me that I need this part eh? Did you use it or just the Flanging Tool?

Thanks man!

No, you don't need that. If you got the aluminum tubes from Iboats they will come out perfect as is!

Quality Marine Electronics in Zeeland. I guess he's also a welder fabricator.

Yeah, I scratched my head a little as well on that one. I think thats if you use the tube for a drain in a thinner transom where you need the length for your plug to work correctly. I think anyway......

Not a lot going on, been busy camping and other fun stuff but I did get my bow rails back.

They're going to need a slight bend at the rear. He matched them perfect to the originals but the new rear fitting comes off at a slightly different angle than the original. He's only 15 minutes away so no biggie. He also does electronics and custom panels. I'm going to see about having my switch panel made by him. He cnc's them out of Aluminum and powder coats them. I now also have somewhere to get all my wiring and heat shrink connectors when the time comes.

Last night I worked on cleaning up my inner trim and the aluminum rub rail channels. I was planning on painting them but they are in pretty good shape so might leave them as is. It bugs me a little that they won't look brand new, but in the long run, prolly the way to go.

Anyway, I used ZipStrip last night to get the caulk off where they lay on top of the gunnel. When I re-install, should I put them on "dry" and them seam them with 4200 where they meet the gunnel top? Is 4200 what I should use? I would then have the trim masked off so the caulk would get painted but not the trim. Sound right?

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Tonight I took the whole boat and new bow rails back to get them fine tuned. He spent about 45 minutes bending a little here, a little there until they were as perfect as could be. Very happy again. They really look nice. When I picked them up the first time, he only wanted $35 ea., not the $40 he quoted me. Tonight his 45 minutes was free. He wouldn't take anything tonight. So I've got less than $100 into each with the fittings.

DJ - your guy did a nice ay a great price on the rails.

4200 should be fine since it's above the water line. Could you paint first and use a minimal amount of 4200 only around the holes? No masking and less 4200 to clean up. I hope I understand.

Had a little unexpected cash pop up so I splurged for a new control and engine harness. The original harnes was kind of hacked up so this should make it easy getting the engine up and running when the time comes.

Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

Question: On the vinyl covered wood panels for the consoles and front seating, should I drill and rivet/screw them back in after they are epoxied and covered in vinyl? Or, epoxy them, mount with screws to make sure of the fit, them paint boat and cover panels with vinyl, them poke the screws and rivets through the vinyl for final mounting? Remember, I'm fitting everything before paint...

I'm thinking I can drill from the aluminum side to reuse the old holes.
