Awesome wood work man. I should have done the ski locker as well if I would have been thinking.

The boat is looking great with that kicka** gas tank in there as well.

Tonight I sanded all my deck pieces and I got one coat on the bottoms of half of them, I need a bigger garage....

Guys that have done this already, how many coats? Are you sanding between coats? and if so, how are you sanding them. I did sand the epoxy on my seats a little but it loaded up my palm sander paper real quick....

After work today, I picked up my gas tank from a radiator shop that cleaned it out and preasure tested it. They said it was real nasty inside, but got it cleaned out, and said there were no leaks. I looked in through the sender hole with a flashlight and it looks spotless. I also picked up my splashwell side pieces as I had some "extra" holes filled in. Also picked up some aluminum angle to build the framing for a rear bench.

I did two or three coats on each side and as much as it took on the edges.

I saw the photos of the rig in the other thread and she looked great before the restoration. Can't wait to see what it looks like after all this work.:)

Here is my understanding dj...

1. Allow the epoxy to fully cure. Sand it with 80 grit, clean, and lay down another coat. (mechanical bond)

OR

2. Let it cure to just tacky then lay down another coat. (chemical bond)

On all my pieces, except the deck, I used method #2. On the deck I had to let it fully cure as I had to stand on it for the next application.

I am thinking that your sandpaper was loading up quick as the epoxy may not have been fully cured, eh?

Hopefully one of the guys will correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

I need a bigger garage....

Dood! I need one too! Lately I have been hatching a plan for a bottom feeder boat house.:)

I did two coats each side, hit the edges every time. I let each dry 24 hours and sanded before the next coat. Clark Craft's web site specifically said I didn't need to sand but there were bumps and bubbles so I figured I may as well smooth them out. I did the second coat on the tops after they were installed in the boat to help seal the fasteners. The first coat was pretty rough, the second ended up looking like bar tops. Kinda a shame to cover it all up. You may regret just letting it drip in your garage floor, I did.

Tonight, second coat of epoxy to the deck pieces in the above pic. I also have a lead on some original rub rail, and possibly the newer version Starcraft is using, which should fit the older channels as well. Going to compare prices tomorrow and decide. I should be able to end a lot of the rub rail confusion tomorrow.

Just ordered new rub rail insert. I recieved an e-mail from Barbour Plastics which makes Starcraft rub rail inserts that the original style is no longer produced. But, she gave me a profile that is a newer Starcraft insert that should fit the older rails and it is still in production. It's Barbour Model F7114 and the Starcraft part Number is 3570046. I just gave my local SC dealer this part number and they will have it in 2 days for $1.20 ft. I did find a 47' length of the original profile at Leaders Marine in Kalamazoo Mi, but they want $3.50/ft. I will post pics when I get the new rubrail.

Tonight I got the first coat of expoy on the bottoms of the rest of the deck. I did the second coat last night on the first 3 pieces and wow, that second coat layed down like glass.

I also got the forward 1/3 of the hull finished with Gluvit.

Great work including finding the rub rail inserts. Let me know how they fit and I'll be ordering some as well.

All that wood and the hull will be watertight with the epoxy coats and gluvit treatment.

Today was spent mainly cleaning the garage up as It was getting hard to find stuff and basically it was just a big mess. I did get the "floors" cut for my new ski locker and for where the gas tank sits.

IMG_3149.jpg

I went round and round on how to do the ski locker and it ended up being very simple. I was trying to dream up a way to support the floor using aluminum angle and flat stock but the stringers are not perfectly verticle so that wasn't going to work. I wanted to be able to take the locker floor out through the opening if say I needed to replace a rivet or just take a look at the hull down there. This is what I ended up with:

IMG_3150.jpg

The locker floor rests on the 4x4 which is shaped on the bottom to match the ribs amd rests on the ribs at the outside edges as well. I will screw the floor to the 4x4 and to the ribs in 6 places. I will be able to reach all these screws through the locker opening if I ever need to take the locker floor out. I plan to lay 2 layers of 1 1/2" thick sheet foam on the floor and then lay in a rubber mat cut to fit. That adds about 175lbs of flotation and the locker will still be plenty deep.

Tonight I got my fuel tank and ski locker floors epoxied (first coat) and 90% of the Gluvit is done on the hull. We are getting close to floating this thing to check for leaks.:D

Another coat of epoxy on the locker and tank floors tonight. Also got my Gluvit done. Since the splashwell is still out, I am going to temporarily seal the transom thru bolds with rubber washers and get it back on the trailer in the next few days. Hopefully I can get a day soon without rain in the forcast to drop it in the water and see how it don't leak.

Are you going to add some weight to it prior to floating to check for leaks?

If it's a bare hull you might not get enough pressure to show leaks, and she might float so high that rivets normally under the waterline will be above. When the fully assembled there might be leaks that won't show up now is my concern. Just a thought.

Maybe just park it in the rain with the plug in for a day or two? :)

It's funny you mention that, my Dad was over the other day and we were talking about that. We'll see here in a few days what she does. I was trying to thnk of how to get some weight in it, prolly the easiest would be round up some people. I could throw the kicker on the back and take them for a ride too....:D

Boat and trailer reunited tonight. Saturday is looking like the day to put it in the water. Anyone want to volunteer themselves as dead weight?

Picked up a new rub rail insert today that I ordered. It fits ABSOLUTELY perfect! I'll post pics and part #'s later.
