Re: 1979 22' Starcraft SuperSport V5 Restoration

I got the port gunwall out this weekend (another almost 200 rivets) and got all new tops cut and drilled. I clamped the old tops on the new aluminum and drilled all the rivet holes through so the news ones are exact duplicates of the old, except all the holes I don't want.

And I did get to Harbor Freight to get one of those air rivet guns.

Dj that looks great. Do you think it was neccessary to brace the hull before removal? Next worry of mine is if the new rivets will tighten up if I use the existing holes, were any of yours worn/made larger? I know I should have already done this step but I am going to learn from you.;)

The original rivets were 11/64 (.172") diameter. The new rivets are 3/16 (.188") Yesterday when I drilled the new pieces I went with an 11/64 drill, drilling through the old ones into the new one. I figure when I put them back up and line them up I will redrill with 3/16 through the new piece through the old hole in the boat to end up with a new clean hole for the new rivet.

The hull sides are VERY flimsy without the gunwalls on. I thought it would want to flex out, but instead it flexed in. I now have some 2x4's across the inside of the hull holding it. You could probably get away without support but I just felt better with something in there. I'll take a couple pics for you tonight. All my support consists of is a couple 2x4's and some ratchet straps.

I believe if they made 11/64 rivets the original holes would be fine to reuse as long as you were careful drilling the old ones out.

When you rebuild a boat you really rebuild it:D

Nice work. I think you may qualify for a new hull ID # when you are done with all that new aluminum.

I dropped off the inner gunwall (verticle) pieces to a local weld shop. There are about 25 small holes in each, they figured about and hour to do each, and they would be done sometime next week.

Took a seat apart tonight so I can use the pieces as templates to make new ones. Kind of a nasty job. It's great that they used stainless screws on everything, but the t-nuts were plain steel and all rusty and coroded to the screws.

I think I will use exterior grade plywood for the seat bases and frames, then coat them with epoxy. I have an upholsterer lined up to start working on my stuff as I get it ready.

Here is a shot with both gunwall removed. It can only go back together from here. :D

Now I can see those seats. Looks like they built up the side of the seats with wood...mine are built up with foam. It's all in how the foam is cut so you can probably lose those little strips unless you like the stiffness.

I was wondering if my seats were factory and it looks like they were... I used a 120lb dog to take my seats apart so that saved a lot of time :)

If you don't mind me asking...

What did your upholstery guy quote ya on those seats?

I have found (after a lot of looking around) that shopping for good deals and buying new is less that what it costs to re upholster.

That deal that EZ posted up is stinkin good. I'd bet that a super low end, cheap upholstery guy would charge at least 2x that to redo, ya know.

Keep in mind I am a cheepo, scrounger, bottom feeder type though:D

The rebuilding in new wood isn't all that bad considering you have good templates.

I'm sure my upholstery will look good considering everything in the boat that is wood is pretty much getting covered.

I almost went this way before the madness set in. They can do custom colors and you can order the upholstery in rolls as well. I don't know of anyone that has tried them though...

That funny stuff right there, true stuff, but funny stuff!

I think that is a great find sprint, custom colors too! Build your own seat box and you'd save another $60 each, that deal is tough to beat.

(I see they make custom jump seats at $40 each, hmmmmm):D

North Beach got some of his seats in the LL from Veada.....

I agree with Sprintst, I can pick out whatever color, texture, pattern, and quality of vinyl I want going this route and everything will match. If I did go "off the shelf", Veada looks to be the best that I have found.

Jas, I haven't gotten a price yet, I have picked out vinyl, but we're searching for the best (cheapest) source to get it, as well as foam. The person doing my stuff did some work on a neighbors boat that came out great and was much less than they were expecting.

If you got a connection then that might be the way to do it. The Veada wood wouldn't be epoxied etc if that matters.

At least you've got options as the shipping for me was brutal.

I picked up some of that Arauco Plywood from Menards that EZ likes to rave about to build my back to back seats out of. I almost got it all cut. It seems to be pretty nice wood for the price. Much nicer than regular exterior grade. I need to order new hinges and a bunch of 1/4" t-nuts so I can screw it all together. Jamestown Distributors has stainless steel t-nuts pretty reasonable. Sorry, no pics.

I just fell on your resto thread tonight while I was looking around. Man! the more i see these Tinnys going together, the more I like them. Unfortunately there are not many of the older Stars around in my area, otherwise I would be tempted to get one. Great work, I will be following your progress.

enjoy
