I know it is oil base and would cut the enamel, but not sure you would want to clean/prep with it. Have you ever tried it B2?

sorry i'm just now getting back with you on this. no, i use xylene for solvent cleaning of surface beforehand. i just mean for thinning the enamel itself; it's what i've always used.

boat progress looking great. helpers, what a concept. but those live oaks will now go from asset on resto to problem once you are picking acorns and spanish moss out of your paint.....

I'll tell ya Glen and B2... I took that picture, turned around and grabbed a beer... and all the help was gone!!! It sure is hard to find good FREE help around this place. Ha Ha.

I bought a 30 pack of beer tonight so I bet I'll get some help tomorrow grinding down that old trailer.

Why not use aluminum bolts. Stainless is rust resistant to a point, but will rust eventually and react negatively with the hull over time. You can get 1/2 in aluminum 1/4X20 bolts, nuts and washers at Fastenall or any good hardware store.

That sounds like the way to go. I've since uncovered another 6 or 7 rivits that I needed to drill out. I wonder if that's enough to consider learning how to install those type of rivits?

CJ - bolts for onesies and twosies. Sounds like you're finding about a dozen and there may be more. I would think about solid rivets or closed head pop rivets. Fix it right and Gluvit or Coat-it the inside then you won't have any more problems for a long time.

The end of my ribs were open...used a tank vacuum with hose and vacuumed out a lot of junk from the ribs...will a hack saw blade slide under the rib through the drain holes? not trying to cut anything...just cleaning out the drain holes:D

no, i meant using the hacksaw blade to clean out the limber holes in center of bilge....fits perfectly in that little rectangular opening in each rib

Thanks GA.

I ordered a couple different sizes of closed head pop rivets yesterday. While at it, I got some big head rivets for the floor.

Some of my ribs are full of foam on the ends. The limber holes are finally cleaned out though... a little blood, keyhole saw, electrical fish tape, and a pressure washer. ha ha

I used everything else but a hacksaw blade. Sure wish I had thought of that B2!

The paint was in real bad shape. So much worse than the 16' SS I just finished. This one needed to be completely taken down to the shiney.

We made pretty quick work of though with a DA sander and about 75 220 grit sanding discs.

We're all ready for some etching primer. Gonna try to do it first thing in the morning. I'm picking up a free boat tomorrow which will probably take up most of the day. It's pretty exciting since this one looks like it has a nice swim ladder.

It has the same 120hp mercruiser and I'm hoping to take the two engines and make one good'in. The PO of the SS cracked the block by not winterizing it. The freebie is supposed to have good compression in 2, 3, 4 and none in 1 cylinder. Hopefully, that's a stuck valve because I've got a good head on the SS. Worst case is that I'll have a rebuildable core from the freebie boat.

Here's some photos of the boat I brought home for a case of beer:

This thing weighs 2 tons.... I guess I'm used to pulling tin cans. I suspect the foam is soaked but there is no water coming out.

The donor has a nice swim ladder, good gauges, a decent pedistal seat, and a bunch of stuff to sell.

We got one base coat done on the bottem.

I've had a hard time making a decision for the accent color. I bought some blue paint from HD and took that back and grabbed hunter green paint. Changed my mind again today and took the green back to HD and grabbed the blue. LOL I'm certain now that it will be royal blue. ha ha.

While waiting for the paint to dry, I started going through the donor boat. I found some pretty cool stuff: a brand new prop, fishfinder, a toolbox full of tools and motor parts, a big ol anchor....
This donor boat is a 79 model and is pretty solid. I almost hate to strip it, but I need the motor. I wonder if I can save the disposal fee by putting up a free boat add on CL.

May cost you the trailer.. But you might get a little something for it as a set.

I can't imagine needing a free boat w/out a motor & a trailer. But the ad costs you nothing:)

They won't be taking the trailer, but maybe someone has a rotten boat with a decent motor.... and here in TX the title is probably worth something. ha ha

Like I said the ad is free, maybe someone has that needs some of the trim, windshield or whatever too..

It's Texas, SELL it to a gun club :) A well placed impact target would make it sporty  SAFELY & away from the public

and if you do, let me know where it is....the idea of shooting up a glasser sounds like fun! since the Mexican authorities won't let me have that .50 Browning on the bow, this may have to do.......
