Re: 1978 Sea Nymph SS160 resto
Update on my progress, last week I went back to work on an easy does it light duty. This weekend I officially started on the rebuild, I hope anyway. The paint stripping was completely finished, the boat was scrubbed and pressure washed. I also put some water in the bottom and checked for leaks on my creeper underneath, nothing even weeped a drop. I used some JJV aluminum cleaner on all the above deck aluminum and man does it shine now.
I got all the lower unit seals replaced, water pump rebuilt and a new thermostat in the Johnson. I fitted an awesome addition to the transom, a CMC PT130 tilt/trim. Tested the unit with power and made sure all the holes were correct.
I cut the wood pieces for the console and fitted it before sanding and putting a coat of Zinsser oil base primer, paint and then spar on.
I remembered when doing the dry fit on the PT unit that my transom cap was mangled, cracked and in 2 pieces.
I had to come up with a new cap so I put my thinking cap on and invited my resto buddy over to help me think. This is what I came up with -
Material I used was 1/16th" aluminum stock. With the transom wood in place and secured, we laid the aluminum down on top, started the bend cold with the shape of the transom and secured it with screws in the middle. Then we applied heat with a torch and used a round steel bar and rolled it downward to create the bend. Once the flat piece was bent it fit nice and tight, then it was secured with screws above the bend and below. Then came the tricky part, heating the aluminum up just right while using a hammer to slowly bang the bend into the aluminum over the edge. There was some smoke from the old transom wood so I suggest if someone tries this to do it before the transom wood is all done up.
Cost 18 bucks.
Now I'm on to priming the hull.
