core sample is done by taking a small drill bit, and drilling part way into the transom (DO NOT DRILL THROUGH!!!) and then analyzing the wood shavings. (You fill the hole with 3M 5200 to seal it up again). It should be dry wood...if its wet or mush, you're looking at a transom replacement, and likely stringers as well.
Our boats tend to rot in the 'hip pockets' of the transom...(lower left & right quadrant)...mine was rotted in this 1 area. If you look closely, you can see where its rotted from the keyhole and wicked the water into the transom area. I knew what I was in for when I found that...
