Going in for windows tomorrow. Got enough paint on it for windows to be installed. Clear laminated glass. Gotta put a white light up there on top too.

Re: 1977 Orrion becoming an ocean animal

Thanks GT1M. It turned out to be 80 lbs added, but it was about 250 lbs removed when I got the water logged deck, foam and transom out of it 2 winters ago. So the net weight reduction of the transom / stringer / new deck job 2 winters ago is 250 minus 80 for a net of 170 lbs lighter as of now than when water logged 2 years ago. The halibut fishing trips usually cover about 30 to 38 miles round trip burning about 6 gallons of gas. It took 8 gallons in the waterlogged configuration for the same trip so I saved about 2 gallons per trip last year, and that's a bunch. Much less power to get on a plane and go. I'll probably lose a little bit by adding the 80 lbs.

I went in for the window glass and they needed to order the rubber, so this weekend is no fishing, no big deal. Looks like they can do it Monday or Tuesday. I could splash it windowless but heck with that. I need to mount the antennas, hailing speaker and landing net holder anyway, along with some more paint inside and out. I still never painted (or gel coated) the cap or the very bottom. I painted the sides of the hull after the rebuild last year but it's been an ongoing project in modular form so the paint is unfinished. This winter I'll flip the boat over the paint the bottom and also do the cap. The little by little methodology has kept me able to use the boat throughout the process.

Albacore tuna are getting pretty close too, about 30 miles out right now. That's just within reach for this boat. The last 4 days have been a glass smooth ocean with no swell totally flat, like a lake out there with the sun out and clear. Whales and all kinds of other life out there, it's a magic place.

Windows.

There are two left to install. After that, I'll work the wrinkles out of the rubber masks in the tight corners. They totally come out under careful application of a heat gun and a window mask knife. I like the black window masks. They match the lettering and bumper strip rail. Clear windows because most of my launches are early morning in total dark.

Mount an antenna or two just for the weekend coming up and a few other attachments and I'll be fishing this weekend. It only took 3 months longer than planned. A total of 6 months to complete. Just in time for the end of the salmon season. hahaha

I am always amazed by the skills I see from members on this board.
I also had a 15 1/2 tri hull and I never though it could be made into something like this.
Action pics are a must!

Wilco on the video and pics. Sometime during or after this weekend. I just got it back into the garage with all windows installed. The window job was 795 bucks, so I think I spent about 1100 or 1200 on this. What a dummy, I didn't even keep track!

Stoked!

Sea trial. I decided to test full out. We put 3 full sized adults on and fished salmon and halibut for 6 hours 10 miles offshore from Eureka, Ca. I've never fished 3 people on this boat, but I found out it was doable. Non stop hookup action, I just ran the boat, my son taught his buddy how to salmon fish. So they got their limits and I declined to take fish home today. We turned loose quite a few legal fish but under 23 inches. No halibut love.

I was over the moon happy with the boat. Most of the day it was operated with the canopy back to the second click. Really happy with how the sea trial went, nothing malfunctioned. Took very few pictures. I might get some from my son off his iPhone.

After the trip, this is the canopy position for most of the day.

Still some interior work to do and then some electronics to add. I'm running 2 vhf's, one fixed on 68 and the other scanning all channels with 68 locked out. Don't miss any action that way.

I will post some action shots and maybe video later.

The boat is "one of a kind" and you have done some great custom work on your fishing machine. No pictures of the bounty?? We have a rule here on Iboats, without pictures, it just didn't happen. Again, you really have done some great work on your boat!

Great craftsmanship there indeed. Congratulations on the splash! I also like the photography posting from your garage. No flash right?

I like the idea of completely taking over a boat and making it what ever you need / want.

Re: 1977 Orrion becoming an ocean animal

Some action video here. It's been a busy summer with a daughter's wedding and all, so with that and the late season launch, today was my first solo fishing trip in the modified boat. Three previous trips were with passengers on board. Today was a junky forecast so it was a gamble to expect to be able to drift for halibut but it turned out to be a great 5 hours of drift time. Just no fish. I got one take down but it didn't stick.

The first video was taken leaving Humboldt Bay, and the second was coming back in after being blown off the halibut grounds by 25 knot southerlies 10.5 miles offshore. The structure has made a huge difference in comfort level when wind is present. Also, even without any weather seals, there are no leaks where the sliding canopy meets the windshield frame. Water drainage was perfect without anything getting inside. I'm really happy with it.

I have a JRC 2kw radar going on the top of this thing a little later.

Leaving Humboldt Bay. Using headphones helps to hear my comments. This is junky video with horrible bouncing, but so be it. Look away if you get woozy.

Next post below shows a small portion of the return trip back in.

That's very cool!! Very nice engineering on that top. Maybe I missed it, but what locks the sliding top onto the tracks? Im assuming that there is no standing headroom at the helm. And last, how is the visibility? Did having the smaller viewing area cause you any issues?
