I recently purchased this boat and the pin was broken that holds the worm gear. I put the worm gear back onto a new pin and reassembled the tilt assy. When I tried to lower the stern drive it would skip down and not drop smoothly. When I tried to raise it the stern drive would not move. It acts like it is bound up. I am assuming that the teeth on the ring gear are my problem but I don't know much about this system. any idea would be helpful.

Support the drive up off the tilt quadrant, and then engage the tilt motor. See if the gear turns smoothly. I'm thinking it's either your clutch pack or your motor.

When I puled the cover off of the clutch pack housing it had a bunch of water in it. I was told to clean throughly with brake cleaner, blow out with compressed air and soak the pack in OMC type C lube for several hours then repack the housing with marine grade grease and I was good to go. What do you think?

that's all fine but won't cure a "skipping" problem- need to figure that out first
