Did a little research and just wanted to double check before ordering parts.
I have a 1977 Mercury 1750 (175hp v6) that hasn't been on the water for 15+ years. The boat has been restored and now I'm trying to get the kinks worked out of the motor.
I took it to the lake for the first time last week. It started and idled fine just like it did on muffs. Getting up on plain was a bit of a stuggle for it at first but finally took off and ran fine for a few minutes. once I backed off on the throttle, it loaded up and died. fuel dumping out of the carbs. I was able to get it started enough to get it back to shore but it would never get back up on plain and eventually wouldn't start and I had to winch it onto the trailer.
Here is what I have done to the motor already.
-Rebuild carbs / fuel pump / fuel tank / fuel lines.
-Replaced Stator and trigger
-tested all coils and wiring from switch boxes
-checked the manual to be sure I was using the proper jets
-checked for spark on all cylinders.
I have not replaced the switch boxes not do I know if they have ever been replaced. could these be the culprit? The reading that I did lead me to believe that these are causing a weak spark.
any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
