1977 merc 1500 150hp tach

i'm trying to wire my tach from my control box i have a gray,black, black&white brown and purple wires. Purple is hot with switch on so which wires go to the tach i assume purple goes to ign. post black to grnd. and gray to send ? tach is set on 6p is this correct ? if so maybe my tach is bad

You need to move the brown tach signal wire in the motor from the starbord side of the switchbox - to EITHER of the yellow posts where the stator meets the rectifier. Then set the tach for a 12 pole stator. I'd assume the grey post on the tach is for signal.
