1977 johnson 35 hp hard starting

i have a 35 hp 1977 johnson. when i first got it it would start first pull cold.
over time it has becoming worse like 15 times or so to start.
when it starts it idles like crap but when you open her up she runs great.
i removed the carb to clean it and it was like new inside so i had it rebuilt anyways and she still runs the same.
now i noticed oil comming out the exh and the #2 cyl spark plug is always wet with dark/oil fuel. the top one is dry looks fine.
#2 has spark i can see it when i remove the plug and let it hang and pull it you can see spark on both 1 and 2.....hmmm
what can be the deal here guys?
anyone wanna take a crack at it with an answer

You need to supply compression #'s before anyone's going to take an honest stab at it.

i dont know what they were off the top of my head, but whet i checked it and then i looked at the specs they were right there!
don't think compression is the issue,
first i thought that was it after the carb

You need to supply compression #'s before anyone's going to take an honest stab at it.

comp is right on the money!

probably something in your starting procedure or the low-speed side of your carb. If spark is good I'd be looking at the carb for a rebuild. Not hard.

Don't know what "on the money" means so I'll just guess that you're compressing somewhere between 120-125 in each hole.

It really only takes three things to make your engine to run properly, compression, which you said was OK, spark and fuel.

You need to check the spark with a spark tester, set it to 7/16" and make sure the spark is bright blue and has a snap sound when it sparks.

When you overhauled your carb did you remove both jets, clean and blow out all passages with compressed air?

only has one jet in the front nothing else blew the whole thing out and at the bottom of the float bowl there is a screw in plug. the carb is as clean as a whistle. im thinking it's igntion now!
