1977 evinrude warm-up lever

Hello, I tried searching around but I could not find anything but on my 77 Evinrude control box. When I go back to neutral for the warm-up lever to come up I have to push it back down to go into gear. I wasn't sure if that was normal. Sorry if this is a re-post thanks.

Yea it needs to be pushed down to lower the rpm's for your protection & your lower units.

Like, automatically? No. You must manually push the lever down to idle, then shift gears...

Do I understand this correctly, When the engine is warm you push it down but it does not stay down, it pops up whenever you go into neutral?
It should not do that, when you push it down it should stay down.

yeah cold or warm after i go into reverse or forward when i put it back to neutral the lever lifts up and i have to push it down again to shift

Sounds like your cables are misadjusted on the mtr.

they might be it moves freely when using the warm lever itself has no problem going into the gears it seems the lever is a little loose when all the way up how would i go about adjusting it? with the thumb wheel ?

Yes you use the thumbwheel on the cable at the engine. HOWEVER -- before you begin mucking with this read this carefully and make sure you understand what's happening.
1) Remove the engine cover.
2) Study the two cables so you know which one is the throttle and which one is the shift. Obviously the throttle cable hooks to the timing advance which also advances the throttle linkage on the carbs. The shift cable is hooked to the shift lever on the engine.
3) Disconnect both cable from their attachment points on the engine. PAY ATTENTION or mark each one so you don't mix them up.
4) Place the throttle/shift lever on the control box in neutral.
5) Make sure the warm up lever is full down If it doesn't stay down there is a control box issue.
6) Bring the THROTTLE cable end up to its attachement point on the spark advance/throttle linkage while holding the linkage against its idle stop.
7) Do not push or pull on the cable or move the linkage. If the cable end and the attachment point on the linkage is not perfectly lined up adjust the thumb wheel (trunion is what its called) until they do. Then attach the cable.
8) Repeat this process for the shift cable.
Now see if the warm up lever works properly.

did all of the above but it stills comes up.I noticed the lever is loose how do I go about tighten that ? thanks

Really? Shifting mine into gear will bring down the warmup lever. I have a 1976 70 HP Johnson.

did all the adjustments mentioned take linkages off and use thumb wheel to align and reinstall still have to manually push it down to go into gear thank chinewalker

It sounds like what mine was doing. I had to tear the control box apart - was doing this because the key switch broke off. When I got the two halves apart, in the bottom laid a small piece of plastic. There is a "gear" in the control box that returns the warm up lever to nuetral before you can advance the throttle/shift lever. If this is what it is, it is easy to replace. The hard part is to find the part.
Even if this is not your problem, you are not wasting your time if you clean and grease everything. Mine was an 1986 and the grease inside wouldn't come off without scraping and soaking in redneck parts cleaner (gasoline). It was hard as concrete. If you decide to tear apart the "remote control", do youself a favor and take pictures with a digital camera on every step of the process. You will forget how it goes back together and the pictures are a godsend.
