I have 1977 9.9 hp that won't start. has not been run for some time. it was not firing on top cylinder. found crack in ignition coil. replaced. now i get a pop out of the exhaust. checked flywheel key. looked good. both plugs are firing out of the cylinder. a little fuel will come out the exhaust. it seems like a timing problem, but don't no where to look next. will not evan try to run if i feed fuel sraight to carb. i have not done anything to the carb yet. trying all other options first. thanks!!!

Hmm i have seen many timing sensor assemblies go bad with Johnson/Evinrudes of this era. If you pull the flywheel, and the assembly looks melted, change it. Also check the ground for the powerpack just for the heck of it.

Actually now that I think about it, did Johnson switch from points to electronic ignition in 78? Hmm does this motor have points or a powerpack?

has powerpack. every thing looked good under flywheel. just a coil and another part opposite of each other.

1977 has a power pack. If flywheel key and flywheel are matched and properly torqued; then it is in time. sounds like you may need to check and clean all connections including the spark plug boots. Did you use a spark tester and will spark jump the 7/16 in gap?

You can build one using a block of wood, a flat piece of metal and some bolts. Just put the spark plug boots on the bolts, the ground wire on the engine block and adjust the bolts to be 7/16" (around 1/2 an inch will be fine) away from the metal piece (ground). I put some black electrical tape on the back so that the sparks showed up better. If it can be done in the dark, all the better.

Give the starter a pull and see if you get a good spark.

ok having trouble seeing if there is spark on the spark tester. tried grounding spark plug, but could not tell if it is firing now. i'll have to try later when it's not so bright. doing this outside.

Agreed. You should see a bright blue/white spark, not a reddish yellow one.

Boobie and others will tell you that grounding the sparkplug will tell you nothing since it may not be firing under compression; you need to get the spark tester.

before spending too much money......have you checked compression? and if it has good spark you should be able to see it/hear it snap, even in bright sunshine.

have you tried putting a tsp or so of fuel/oil mix directly into the plug holes, and trying to start it? ive had good luck over the years waking up every thing from chainsaws, to snowblowers doing that.
