L77 or QL77 shouldn't make a difference. The "Q" is a radio interference suppressor plug, and recommended for that reason.

Hi all, Was reading over this thread again to really dissect all of your great advise and try to find what I'm missing. #15 from Joe Reeves really hit home with me after reading again and again.

I think now I finally understand his analogy and what a great observation. Since I had killed some of the idle fuel (separate to each chamber with my fingers / 1 at a time ) as the miss continued but the rpm's choked down 100 or so. It would make sense that it is some type of spark problem. because the miss never left nor leaves

Am I on the right track? Should I start with 4 new coils and see what that does?
Thoughts?

Thanks Again, Charlie

Joe also said "if it aint broke.. dont fix it"
Id run it for a few minutes then inspect the spark plugs, they may tell you what cylinder may be off instead of needing to be buying four new coils for her

Another great Idea with inspecting the plugs, I have the whole lower 1/2 off awaiting a new seal kit , I was getting a small amount of oil in the test tank so ordered o rings and seals for lower. I'll get it fired back up this week and will run 15 mins or so then check the plugs.

Thanks for your Thoughts, Charlie

ps, I dont mind investing in 4 coils as these are 40+ yrs old, I just hope I can get it smoothed out a bit

Oil in the test tank is residue from combustion. Before doing R&R on the gear case, do pressure/vacuum test.

Oil muck and sludge in the bottom portion of unit under carrier bearing. It looked pretty obvious. and it stinks to high heaven!! lol. I just figured after setting so long it's some cheap preventative maintenance. the bearing looks fine to me. Should I pack a bit of grease back in that bearing when I install?

The oil I removed from lower unit was clean with no water but it was a little low after 4 hrs on the river 20180916_152832.jpg

That bearing is flooded by oil.----So no need to pack it with any grease !

Racer, It's the advice that you gave me a bit back. "So Now Ya Know" what ya didnt "know" before....

FYI, I also pulled the flywheel, stator & timer off. took a good look @ the top seal. I see no problems there or any signs of problems there. so, we can cross that off the list also. :)
As I stated before I had ordered a new coil for the one that was cracked. (original oem johnson coil)
All my old coils test good per the manual for ohms resistance -- primary = .1 / secondary = 1300
all 4 of my old coils test good to this range.

The new coil only has .290 for secondary. Is this a problem with the new coil?
(observation, The new coil has a much brighter lighting strike color, where my old ones , although test good, dont have that lighting bolt sharp color, they have like a standard orange color?

Any Thoughts appreciated.... Thanks

If spark jumps a gap of 7/16" it can be considered good.----I have boxes full of coils I do not waste time testing them with an ohmmeter !!----Example I just picked up a 115 hp FICHT for parts.----I know that crank and rods will fit the 90 / 115 HP looper with carburetors.----I know that those coils from the 115 HP ficht will fit other motors too , even a 3 HP model some years !
