If you are doing the carbs unscrew the fuel line elbow from the top of each carb and check the screen inside, my engine was only running on 2 of 4 cyls. cause the lower screen was plugged. I removed them this fall.

Hi,
I have a motor that i was using to get parts from. It still is pretty much intact in my building. I took starter off and some more parts. If you need something holler.

Thanks ljohns5582, I still need a stator I think that is the last part that was completely missing. Do you have one of those?

Those assist cylinders are shocks that slow the motor's tilt-up if you hit something in the water then let it move back into running position. They work together with a mercury switch that momentarily cuts off the ignition.Good idea to replace that timing belt.

The stator has some of the insulation broken very near the coil. You probably will need a
different one. Sorry, Larry

http://www.newmantools.com/walton/extrtap.htm Check this link out, I've used these with good success in removing broken taps. I'ts not 100%, but work most of the time. A broken tap is a pain no matter what, since it's so much harder than the material its stuck in.

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Sorry not as of yet still have to do some paint striping and get some parts(fuel line, gaskets, carb kits, probly need a new or used cylinder block cover, and paint. Then I can get back to this project.:D Thanks for asking.
I still can't find where the thermostat is on this motor.

No Thermostats on any of the Towers, they run "cold"

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

I had a 1978, same motor and your pis's are interesting, I noticed a picture of your coil, and where your ground is attached there should be a metal tab coming from the inside of the coil that also attaches to that ground connection. I am surprised the pro's didn't pick that up. The metal tab goes to the metal magnet that wraps around the coil windings, If you take it off and take the rubber boot off you will see if the metal piece,(should be two half's) if they are broken (more than two pieces) the coil is trash and won't fire. Make sure when you re-install it don't crank it down or you will break the metal and the coil won't work, I know because I did it and went through He-- trying to find out why it wouldn't fire(can't be the coil I just replaced it?). Hope this helps Buz

ljohns5582 thanks anyways bud I appreciate the help and thought, yea I need one that will work for sure. How bad is it could it be repaired??

Cadwelder Thanks for the link bud, I already got the piece out. I used a dremel and a whatever bit. will now have to fix that bolt hole. :(

arsenalpsu Yep got that answer a while back in another posting. Thanks for the help.

Chris1956 Yes very interested get in touch with me.... I'll send you a PM with my number or you can send me yours. I would love to talk to you about it further.

buzzm19 Not sure what you are talking about but mine was firing when I started working on this. I did notice the main body(Plastic)had some cracks in it. But it was still working. I did use some JB weld on it to hold it together..... May just need a new one of those.

Hi,
I would only use this stator if i didn't have another choice. The insulation needs to be replaced. It is crumbling off aproximately a quarter inch from coils.
I will give it to you, if you want it. It's a little heavy. Larry

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Do yourself a favor and get a new one, a few extra bucks now will save a lot of time and frustration later when you're stuck on the water because of a faulty stator. Check out E-bay, you can find good deals, if not buy a CDI one.

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

There should be a wiring diaghram on the maxrules web site. On that motor, grey is choke solenoid, white is ign accessory power to the switchbox, red is always hot to the switchbox and the rectifier. Yellow is starter solenoid primary winding. Black is ground on lower cowling. Small black wire goes to other side of starter solenoid primary winding. Brown is tach signal, attaches to one of the yellow stator wires at the rectifier. Orange or salmon is unused.

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

I have recently fired up this 1150 and am having a problem that baffels me. I have done compression tests all are around the 120 psi mark very little variance. I start the motor in a test tank and it will run for about 30 sec then die out. I have clean fuel, good spark and i believe my bulb is good. ( replacing it next).
Im wondering if my carbs floats are possibly the problem? How do I test this ?

Re: 1976 Mercury 1150 inline 6

Try running it again and start squeezing the bulb when it starts to die on you. If it continues to run, you have a pretty good idea that the fuel pump needs a kit.
